Not even sure I'd call it a gay trend and more safe horny. Like John Oliver regularly makes jokes about how much he wants to get it on with Adam Driver, not because he's gay but because that's a joke that's allowed. Can't do that with Sydney Sweeney though, that would be disgusting!
