Hasan Piker’s dangerous and hateful language targeting Jewish Americans has no place in our civic discourse. Suggesting that Jewish Americans bear responsibility for hatred or violence directed against them is wrong, dangerous, and antisemitic.

We can, and should, argue fiercely over policy. We should have meaningful dialogue and debate about the policies and actions of the Israeli government and American foreign policy. That is the lifeblood of democracy. But that’s not what this is.

No American should be told that their political beliefs make them responsible for hatred or violence directed against them. There is a bright line between vigorous debate and rhetoric that stokes hatred toward our neighbors. Mr. Piker has crossed that line, repeatedly and unmistakably.

This week, I received a memo — presumably confidential — addressed to CBC News staff. It is authored by one Basem Boshra, who is the “Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust at CBC News.” In Boshra’s memo, reporters are editors are told this:

“Do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.”

Boshra states that all in bold letters, italicized, as if to emphasize the point..”

“The hijackings led to passenger jet crashes,” it reads, again in italics.

I don't know what it says about me that I find this X-er's choice of censoring "d*aths" and "d-ad" as cringy as the VF reporter.

 It's a valid direct action protest against the Saudi regime, and Muslim world broadly, being too open and tolerant.

Kerry Kelly, the poor woman assigned to defend the insensible, said she’d get back to me. She did. Here is what she said: “CBC’s longstanding language guidance regarding the terms ‘terrorist’ and ‘terrorism’ is a preference for the use of these words with attribution, a practice shared by many of the world’s top journalistic organizations. Our general manager and editor in chief has written publicly in the past on the subject.”

On this, Kerry Kelly is actually right. In my new book The Hidden Hand: The Information War and the Rise of Antisemitic Propaganda, I describe how too many news organizations do not use the word terrorism to describe terrorism. Other news organizations have called terrorists “activists” (BBC), “attackers” (CNN), “fighters” (New York Times), and “militants” (Time).

I understand the idea of "someone's terrorist is someone else's freedom fighter" but surely we could differentiate between the Nelson Mandelas of the world and the ones who fly planes into buildings? How far does this non judgmental approach go? Are Nazi war criminals also just described as generals? There really is just a strange impulse to bend over backwards for people who don't deserve kindness.

Honestly the US ambassador getting involved kind of makes him look worse. Like it's unlikely he put directly pressure on the University but the possibility is now there.

Just an amazing entitlement to demand that these actors distance themselves from what made their entire career and undoubtedly shaped their life considering they're recognized as these characters no matter what they do.

Like none of them have said anything bad about trans people. They just demand that they give up anything related to the franchise
