Hasan Piker’s dangerous and hateful language targeting Jewish Americans has no place in our civic discourse. Suggesting that Jewish Americans bear responsibility for hatred or violence directed against them is wrong, dangerous, and antisemitic.

We can, and should, argue fiercely over policy. We should have meaningful dialogue and debate about the policies and actions of the Israeli government and American foreign policy. That is the lifeblood of democracy. But that’s not what this is.

No American should be told that their political beliefs make them responsible for hatred or violence directed against them. There is a bright line between vigorous debate and rhetoric that stokes hatred toward our neighbors. Mr. Piker has crossed that line, repeatedly and unmistakably.

Hesright It's a valid direct action protest against the Saudi regime, and Muslim world broadly, being too open and tolerant.

Quote:Kerry Kelly, the poor woman assigned to defend the insensible, said she’d get back to me. She did. Here is what she said: “CBC’s longstanding language guidance regarding the terms ‘terrorist’ and ‘terrorism’ is a preference for the use of these words with attribution, a practice shared by many of the world’s top journalistic organizations. Our general manager and editor in chief has written publicly in the past on the subject.”

On this, Kerry Kelly is actually right. In my new book The Hidden Hand: The Information War and the Rise of Antisemitic Propaganda, I describe how too many news organizations do not use the word terrorism to describe terrorism. Other news organizations have called terrorists “activists” (BBC), “attackers” (CNN), “fighters” (New York Times), and “militants” (Time).
I understand the idea of "someone's terrorist is someone else's freedom fighter" but surely we could differentiate between the Nelson Mandelas of the world and the ones who fly planes into buildings? How far does this non judgmental approach go? Are Nazi war criminals also just described as generals? There really is just a strange impulse to bend over backwards for people who don't deserve kindness.

Honestly the US ambassador getting involved kind of makes him look worse. Like it's unlikely he put directly pressure on the University but the possibility is now there.

Just an amazing entitlement to demand that these actors distance themselves from what made their entire career and undoubtedly shaped their life considering they're recognized as these characters no matter what they do.

Like none of them have said anything bad about trans people. They just demand that they give up anything related to the franchise

Quote:CBC News finds itself once again in a swirl of confusion about how our journalists use the words "terrorist" and "terrorism," this time about the al-Qaeda attacks on New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

The confusion stems from the leak of an excerpt from our internal language guide that was published and amplified by a number of outlets without full context or explanation. It has caused significant concern, anger and hurt for many people who believe CBC News seeks to minimize or obscure the horror of that day and who was behind it.

That is the last thing we want to do. And our reporting on 9/11, through thousands of stories over the past 25 years, is an unflinching account of the devastating attacks by al-Qaeda, the hunt and prosecution of those responsible, the thousands of lives that were lost on that day and the incalculable loss and grief experienced by so many others as a result.

And we intend to mark the forthcoming 25th anniversary of 9/11 with extensive, special coverage that will continue to respectfully and thoughtfully reflect on the monumental nature of this tragedy.

CBC's reporting on terrorism, wherever it occurs, has always been guided by the principle of attribution, and like other major news organizations, it has been our practice for decades. The reason for the extreme care around the use of the words "terrorist" and "terrorism" was detailed in this earlier editor's blog.

But to be clear, CBC News has never said what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, was not terrorism, as some commentators have stated in recent days. We have reported fully and accurately on the reasons and motivations for those attacks as determined by police, governments and an independent commission. We've just made sure to do it with attribution.

Clarity and understanding are at the heart of our journalism. The leaked excerpt without context or explanation has raised more questions for the public that we must now answer.

After reviewing our current language guidance, we have decided to adjust it to clarify that direct attribution is not required for describing the historic events of 9/11 as terrorism.

We are doing so to remove what has unfortunately (and unintentionally) become an impediment to clarity and public understanding.

At the same time, as new acts of politically or ideologically motivated violence occur in our world, we will continue to follow the journalistically sound practice of attributing causes and motivations to officials and experts.

Mehdi finally responded; never addresses the Hasan clip

I think it's funny that he's so offended by someone wondering if he harbors islamists beliefs considering his past

Quote:In old recordings that resurfaced this week but have percolated for years, Hasan compared non-Muslims and atheists to "cattle" and included "homosexuals" in a long list of behaviors and categories which he said argued were transgressive of Islam.

"All of these ulama unanimously agree that at the very minimum if Yazid was not a Kaffir — then at the very minimum he was a fasiq, a transgressor, a breaker of Islamic laws, a corrupt individual, a tyrant, a killer a drunkard, a dog lover, a music lover, a homosexual, a pedophile, a sexual deviant, someone who slept with his own mother," Hasan says in an old recording of what appears to be a sermon on Islamic law.

But hey it's okay, he thinks those remarks of him comparing gay people to pedophiles are cringe now

Quote:"Speaking without notes, & trying to be bombastic, I made stupid sweeping remarks about non-Muslims, especially atheists. I cringe now when I rehear/reread those remarks. I made stupid offensive analogies to animals. Argh. I'm embarrassed to have to write about all this again," the thread continued. "But I don't want to defend/explain today. I just want to say, I'm sorry."
