I picked up a PlayStation Portal at the weekend from Facebook Marketplace, so I've come in to the userbase after the release of the Cloud-Streaming beta. Thoughts now follow, and I'm not being paid to say this! 😆







ENTRY LEVEL PLAYSTATION



This thing is awesome. In fact, I would go so far as to say - in places with high speed Internet (that's a sizeable caveat I know) - this should be Sony's entry level device. At MSRP, it costs half the amount of the cheapest PlayStation-proper. It's under ⅓ of the cost of their new flagship model. I imagine if you stripped out DualSense features or cost-reduced the components, you could really drive the cost of something like this down even further.



A new handheld with dedicated silicon will not be cheap, and this device makes me question the wisdom of even making one. You could put this tech in a dongle, or release a version with HDMI-out, and you'd have a gateway drug to the world of PlayStation. As long as users' Internet could handle it, and with some improvements - this could be the last version of PlayStation some people would ever need.



I have mixed impressions / experiences of the cloud streaming from Sony's servers, which I'll get to in a moment - but from both the PS Plus library and my own PS5 - it generally works very well!



If you shop around - you can get the Portal for less than the RRP/MSRP of £200. I picked mine up for £140, and having played over the weekend and the last couple of days - I consider that a bargain.





MORE WAYS TO PLAY



The Switch transformed any notions of how, when and where I could play my Nintendo library; it conveniently reduced the costs incurred personally too, because I no longer have to buy two separate devices each generation. Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud streaming have let me play Xbox games on my mobile devices and PC in a similar way. I actually played Psychonaughts 2 entirely via streaming (on a tablet, with a proper gamepad) long before I eventually picked up a Series X. This device has been similarly transformative for me for PlayStation.



I have 2 small children and a wife that loves watching TV / Films / Youtube. At the start of this gen, I invested in a new TV, but I'm not anti-social -- we all share it. Anything that gives me "more ways to play" is most certainly a positive.



I have felt myself at odds with the wider Internet at times this year, because - while people have been lamenting the performance of the Xbox (and seeing the multiplatform strategy as some kind of death knell), I have been playing my Xbox more than my Switch or my PS5. For the last few days I've been playing Indiana Jones on the Xbox itself, and if the TV is in use of an evening - I play it on my PC. The save game seamlessly synchronises and away I go. I could stream it if I wanted, to similar effect.



Over the past year, I've picked up games for the PS5 and then just let them linger in the backlog. Every month, I try and find time to check the monthly PS Plus games and maybe download one or two of those - but I don't really play them.





ENTER THE PORTAL



Upon day 1 of owning this device, I went back to Astro Bot, and last night I platinumed it. I went back to Ratchet and Clank. My youngest son had deleted my save in Spiderman 2 months ago and I found it too demoralising to start another. I've now started again. I've got other games like Sonic x Shadow Generations, Frontiers, FF XVI, GOW:R - in various states of play, unfinished, and I feel I can finally crack on with them. There are smaller-budget games I just haven't had the time to try, or I would prefer playing them on my Switch, now I feel like the PlayStation is an option. I feel like I'm finally able to get my moneys worth from my PS5... it just cost another 140 quid to make it happen 🙈





CLOUD STREAMING



My time spent with the cloud streaming is kind of limtied but I've played a few PS One games and the opening parts of FFVII remake. The way it all works is quite nice, the quality - particularly on the handheld's screen, is at a good standard, and the input latency is - in my opinion - acceptable and often quite good. However, one critique I have is that the way they handle game-saving and connection-loss is a bit frustrating.



I was moving around the house when playing FFVII's intro sequence, and I lost connection -- when I restarted, it was basically a whole new session -- I had to play everything again. To me, it would make sense to suspend (or pause) games on a connection loss, and keep sessions alive for a minute or two. This would give players a chance to reconnect and resume the game. I'm sure there are some kind of heuristics they could employ to detect if the connection loss was intentional, ie. is the user back online, is their account or Portal reachable? They could suspend the game, poll for PS sign-in a few times, backing off gradually until just giving up. That's what I'd do personally. I realise that might come with higher running-costs.



Likewise, they are telling users they can transfer their saves and download games to their physical device after streaming - and I think this is just bad UX. I may be wrong, and it may already work like this (in which case they should probably just change the advice) - but to me, I think they should just be synchronising saves automatically. Make it seamless like play anywhere games for Xbox and Xbox PC.





HEADSETS



I understand why Sony are using their own proprietary system for headsets. I use bluetooth pods with my Switch, and there's an ever so slight latency when using them - but I find that super convenient. My choices with Portal are either a Pulse headset or something wired. I'd like to see more options in future.





TLDR



This is, to my gaming life, what I hoped it would be. It actually increases my interest in devices like Logitech's GCloud - because I find myself wishing I could also play my Xbox and PC library on it. I suppose going forward that might get easier 😆 - I was a little disappointed to read that the HEVC decoder hack that allowed PSP emulation has been patched, and kind of hope it gets hacked again to allow universal streaming domination.



All in all, I'm happy with my purchase and I just wanted to share thoughts in case anyone else is in a similar boat and needs pushing over the edge
