If you're above the age of 15 and you're complaining about Christmas gifts, you just don't have the mental resilience to do much of anything useful.  I know that sounds harsh, but the world will become unbearable if this is what sets you back.  People on the far right think the hierarchy separating success from poverty is IQ.  That's just not the case -  Intelligence is becoming too cheap to meter - the real limiting factor is how fucked up your brain is as an adult.  I am aghast that a 40 year old man is complaining about this.  Is this person human?

As I said in the OP, I don't want to tell the entire story for various reasons, but ofc this holidays is not where it began. I'm almost 40 and the relationship with my parents began to worsen ever since I was circa 15/16, basically when I started to have interests of my own that my father didn't share and to this day actively shits on (videogames, anime, "Hollywood movies" (yes, he actively hates American-made movies. Couple years ago we had Batman Begins running on TV for 2 minutes, when he started shouting at the TV "FUCK AMERICANS!!1". Completely unhinged, sigh)). He's a living "no fun allowed zone"-meme, accept that that's not funny when it comes in the form of an abusive choleric who somehow successfully manipulated the entire family into always taking his side. "Because he worked hard his whole life". How I hate that sentence that is nothing but a bad excuse. My mom was more supportive for most my life, but she's always been afraid of my father where she wouldn't dare to speak out against him, so that support was limited and I didn't want her to do it, because I knew keeping the "happy family"-facade was important for her, toxic as it may be.

Then half a lifetime of this continued and here we are at this year's Christmas eve, which I was looking forward to, because I got to give presents to my 3 little nieces. Which I did and was nice. Got the two older ones a bunch of quality dinosaur-figures to infect them with the dinosaur virus, lol. And the 6 month old got a giant Penpen-plushie, because my insane brother managed to convince his wife to give her the second name "Lilith". And yes, he's an Evangelion-fan, lol, but it's totally because it's a traditional, religious name, lol.

So in all that, I realize that christmas is not about me. I'm not sad that I didn't get some specific present. The only reason I still write a yearly wishlist is because my mom asks for it and is sad if her three sons don't. But then things happened. Suddenly, after a lifetime of Christmas being an important tradition, it wasn't. And then even within that, it was worse than I expected, but I won't write all the details, because it's somehing that sounds so mundane, but hits different when you experience it yourself. The mixer yesterday was just some additional "ugh", it wasn't the big bad thing in itself. But then before going to bed I wrote my mom a message "I love you. And dad, too", because I felt bad again. And now I encourage them to continue. I just can't break free and due to my health situation, it's difficult to move away which I have planned, but then planned home therapy fell through because of organizational reasons beyond my control, now I'm on a waiting list.

That's more than I intended to tell, honestly. And again, I know a lot of people have it way worse. I'm semi-regularily posting in the Gaza-thread, because it keeps frustrating and shocking me what's happening there. The frustrating thing about my life is that it's bad enough to make me cry and give me ... really bad thoughts, yet it's seemingly good enough to the outside to remove me the right to complain. I feel so incredibly trapped where I can't talk to anyone. I don't expect a lot of goodwill here either, just needed a moment to vent my feelings. It's okay if this thread slowly vanishes from page 1 and then further.
