I think there's an interesting idea here but one of the main premises is wrong. MCU Steve Rogers was frequently seen as and expected to be an anti-MAGA symbol, with Chris Evans even playing into that off the screen. No one forced Marvel to make Captain America films and no one forced them to give Sam the shield. So, we can ridicule and criticize the weakness of these films as the political reality in this country is only worse. This article literally tries to argue that Sam is the aspirational leader kids need these days, because you gotta talk to and reason with MAGA racists and traitors just like he reasoned with Red Hulk.

Maybe I'm crazy, but to me it just feels like regardless of the movie's actual quality there is just..a lot.. that has been orbiting this project for a long time.

Women and minority characters leading superhero films get one chance at bat, apparently, and if they don't nail the absolute perfect home run then it feels like they must never be seen or heard from again. The bar is raised for them and they absolutely cannot be mediocre. That's probably a seperate discussion, but it sucks.

I think this is is connected because I fear that even the new Cap is/was a success, he'd STILL only have one shot because women and minority heroes are always only have one shot, on thin ice and always expect to succeed and be impactful. Like with women, despite the success of both Wonder Women and Captain Marvel, when 1984 and Marvels came out as failures, suddenly the same old rhetoric of "women don't sell" appear from execs, press and fans (please ignore all the examples that prove otherwise, seriously why does Wakanda Forever get completely ignored!?); with the previous films dismissed as "anomalies", "only successful because of the hype for Endgame/Justice League" etc: hell we saw this rather openlly with Sony after Madame Web.

Underrepresented groups constantly have to worry that the next succeeds and is impactful because one false move is all fucking executives need to "prove" we don't sell (aka, they don't want to make them and using it as an excuse). I remember the discussion before Black Panther and Captain Marvel, how do many fans were worried they'd fail which should not be the case but the depressing reality we are.

In defense of WW84, theaters were dead with COVID and it was same day as streaming. As far as 2020 movies after February, it and Tenet were the two biggest. Also in 2020, people got furious at Christopher Nolan for wanting Tenet released in theaters. We all like to forget 2020.

As I'm fact checking myself, I see they made a Doctor Dolittle reboot with Robert Downey Jr for $175 Million and it was a huge flop well before COVID came around. Serves them right for white washing.
