As a loser who cares about Star Trek lore, the communism link has always been bothersome. Humanity was a mess after nuclear wars. Zefram built the first warp vessel because he was a hardcore capitalist who wanted money. By luck, this drew attention of the Vulcans. And even then it was a long while until there were magical machines like the replicator.

I mean, there's no evidence of communism in Star Trek anyway. We're supposed to assume it off a couple lines but nobody ever shows anything remotely resembling central planning or even that the society is post-scarcity. The various members of the Federation don't seem to be ordered to produce anything beyond what they want and most even have clearly independent government structures*. The ships aren't even examples as dilithium can't be replicated, it has to be mined from somewhere. Federation members openly talk about "credits" so even Picard's line about having no money is false. A better interpretation of that line and one that matches what we see is that the Federation, or more specifically Earth, is so incredibly wealthy that most everything from the 20th Century is free because the cost is so astronomically low. Picard was after all talking to someone from our time who had been frozen until then. Sisko's dad runs a restaurant and I suppose we should infer that it's just because he likes doing it and nobody gets paid for anything because it's replicated but he still owns the property. There seems to be no implication that the Federation or Starfleet could just appropriate it to store some antimatter since it's been in the family.

*The entire plot of DS9 makes no sense if Bajor was supposed to be considering just subsuming itself completely into the Federation to obey whatever it's ordered to do by it. This may be preferable to the same relationship with Cardassia, but why consider it at all if you could stay independent?

DS9 itself really undermines any theory of communism as well. How could any of the characters do business on the Promenade if they didn't have money? Starfleet gives them latinum just to use at Quark's? Wouldn't this risk someone using the supply of latinum and starting capitalist businesses inside the Federation? The Admirals who do crimes every other week are just too moral to do this? Even if it would benefit their schemes?
