I think they feel incredibly uncomfortable at not knowing if they should support the character or not. Everyone needs to be fit into a box of what side of history they're on. This is why labels and identities are so important, you don't have to deal with the actual person, only your personal expectations.

You can see it in their conception of moderates/centrists, in which they can't fathom that a moderate/centrist position is entirely relative and can come from an aggregate of extreme/radical positions or otherwise firm positions on an endless array of topics that just happen to result in an aggregate between two poorly defined and ever shifting poles that are themselves mostly relative. No, a person must be choosing halfway between complete Good and complete Evil, which is Evil. And doing so deliberately, observing the lay of the land and everyone's position before in bad faith picking their own nefarious one for their benefit. It's the same reason they attack those nearer to them with the most vehemence, enemies are trustworthy in their opposition to you. But someone like Joanne can betray you at any moment on anything while pretending to be your ally on everything else.
