That's the part that I'm surprised about during this debate. Like, disagreeing with the anger toward the ending is fine. But turning it into a "so you'd rather Nani give up her life??" thing is kind of shocking to me. The implication that a young parent has to give up their hopes and dreams if they raise a child.

One of my best friends for about 15 years now had a daughter at 17 years old. Both of her parents passed a couple years prior. She barely even had a support system. After having her daughter, she went to school to be a hairdresser and has owned her own salon for years now, while her daughter just started college.

It is absolutely possible to both have a child at a young age and go after what you want in life. They're not mutually exclusive.

I'm not even saying that giving up custody isn't the right choice for some people. It is! But this does go against the intention of the original film, which is why it's being criticized so much.
