It’s amazing how unhealthy ree are. They must have the worst diets on the planet.

So about a month ago, after finally taking account of how much Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, and Fanta that I drink on a daily basis (at least 5-8 a day), I decided to try to remove it from my diet. My main reason is that I had recently been reapproved for my psoriasis medication, and I wanted to lose weight after the plaques cleared up so that I could have a nice overall body presentation. If you don't know, severe psoriasis pretty much makes working out one of the most painful experiences one can endure between the cracking of your skin when you engage in repetitive motions to the "salt on open wound" feeling across your entire body when you start sweating. Considering that I was ingesting anywhere from 1000 to 1500 extra calories a day on beverages alone, this seemed to be a layup in terms of starting off on my goal.

I've learned some things over the past month:

1. Carbonated water is called different things at different places, and sometimes you do get something different. For example, McDonald's calls it "seltzer water", while Wendy's calls it "sparkling water", and the Publix store brand is called "Club Soda." I had always used these terms interchangeably, but they are all technically different. Seltzer Water is plain water artificially injected with carbonation, while Club Soda/Soda Water is basically seltzer with other added minerals that give it a saltier taste, and sparkling water is typically naturally infused bubbly water found in nature. HOWEVER, I have to strongly doubt that that is what you are getting at Wendy's, since that sort of thing would be served in a bottle as opposed to from a soda machine. I honestly like all three, and really don't think the differences are so much that one would be put off on any of the three if you just want water with bubbles.

2. If you want Unsweetened Ice Tea (especially in the Southern U.S.), you'd better damned well make it clear. And even then, you still might get sweet tea. I imagine that some of the confusion could be chalked up to the intercoms at drive-thrus and the labeling of the tea cans, but I would say that 1 out of every 5 iced teas that I ordered to be unsweetened ended up being sweet teas. To me, if I say "iced tea" in an order, the default should be unsweetened, but that just isn't the case in these parts (Florida). I understand that it's a popular drink, but to me it tastes like sugar water and makes my mouth do a whiskey face with how sweet it is.

3. Some places brew coffee and tea with the same equipment. I've had a few iced teas that have a coffee aftertaste (at one particular McDonald's it's REALLY apparent) and found out that this is why.

4. It only took me about to a week to stop "missing" soft drinks. I really craved a Pepsi the first few days, to the point that I would consider myself "fiending" for one, tapping foot and all. Over time, that feeling lessened to the point where I don't even think about it now. Which leads me to...

5. The taste of soft drinks can be off-putting if you haven't had them in a while. I went to my favorite Mexican restaurant last week. I have gone there regularly for about 12 years, and am known there so much that when they see me pull in, they'll start my usual order and bring chips and salsa and a Pepsi to the table before I even get inside. I honestly didn't think about this, and instead of sending the Pepsi back, I decided to have just one. The taste was almost alien to me. Like, it was sweet, and I recognized the notes, but it didn't feel like i drank it multiple times a day. Granted, it could have been an imbalance of the syrup and seltzer, but I honestly didn't expressly love it like I would have a little over a month ago. I will say that after I got to the end of it, it started feeling "right", but I made sure to get a Seltzer water for my refill instead of another Pepsi.

6. I feel better. Now it could be the psoriasis meds working their magic, but I have an overall feeling of better-ness going on right now. My joints feel a little less taxed, and I don't feel as full after meals (I would always feel bloated and overfull after eating, even when I didn't go big). And while I'm not really weighing myself or anything like that (and don't plan to until my skin is healed to the point where I can work out again), I am under the impression that I have lost a pound or two. Nothing much, but I just feel lighter and my shirts and pants feel slightly roomier. I'm still eating the same and not working out, but there is a noticeable effect on my overall health from simply cutting out the massive amount of sugar and empty calories I was ingesting through soft drinks.

7. I don't miss soft drinks. As I said before, Pepsi tasted weird after not using for a few weeks. But more to the point, I don't crave a soda like I used to at certain parts of the day (particularly for a morning boost). Having iced tea keeps me in the caffeine game so I'm not dog tired in the morning now, and seltzer throughout the day keeps my mouth happy from fizziness. And it still fills me up a little bit and has the benefit of giving a good burp when I need it.

Anyway, that's it so far. I might do a follow-up in the future if anybody is interested. I am pleased with how I feel and do not regret my decision at all, and would wholeheartedly recommend cutting soft drinks out of your diet if it's something you want to do or think that it might benefit you.

surprisingly, mcd actually does. not anything fancy, just lipton bags and hot water from the coffee machine (hence the coffee taste). its only done like once or twice a day so its not gonna fresh at all but it is brewed there
