Historically though that's the same thing. That's why there's so much crossover between anti-Semitism and the language used against the wealthy and many of these types of ideas seem like they're constantly coming up from the same types of people all the time. Jews were exempt from the prohibitions on things that prevented the escape from poverty, the rest of society wasn't going to abandon those, so Jews were seen as obviously corrupt. It's the same reason so many Jews were merchants and bankers and so on, those occupations were forbidden to everyone else and Jews were forbidden from everything else.

This doesn't necessarily mean using those terms can't be ignorance, like when somebody says they've been gypped by something, I almost never would think they're actually accusing the company or person of being literal gypsies aka Roma. As I regularly say I assume ignorance over malice generally.

You can actually go on Twitter and read threads where people are listing all the reasons they hate Jews and it sounds like they're describing an ancient society rather than one where everybody does those things now. I think it's especially funny in that sort of ALPHA ALT-RIGHT sphere because those dudes are all about getting ahead and getting wealthy and then they'll go into a rant about how Jews are evil because they're culturally good at making money and that means they can't get wealthy. Like, you realize that one of your obsessive ideas is what's preventing you from achieving your other.

I don't think Wakanda is meant to represent modern Africa because fundamentally its technological trajectory is so advanced even beyond the modern West, and its history is devoid of the colonialism and underdevelopment plaguing modern Africa today (which is the appeal; it's a "what could have been?") that it's not meaningfully comparable. I also wouldn't really argue that Wakanda lacked internal strife; that's what the whole battle ceremony was all about, and Daniel Kaluuya's character was sheisty even before Kilmonger showed up.

The issue is pretty blatant: Wakanda knew what was going on with colonialism and literally did fuck all about it, and they are framed as the bad guys for doing nothing about it instead of, you know, the fucking whites who did the colonizing. It leans into feelings of alienation and "being an island" for the Black diasporas. It also lets whites off the hook because, hey, a white moviegoers' money is as green as anyone else's and we can't chase them off by rightfully blaming their ancestors for the shit they did.

But, again, this is ahistorical because the idea of a shared Blackness, a shared oppression, didn't really exist in Africa during colonialism, and in many ways and contexts it still doesn't (although I'm invested into Pan Africanism as a movement regardless.) You were part of your community and if you had some fucking asshole from another community as a prisoner of war, why the fuck not sell him into slavery, especially to protect your own? Sucks to suck; don't run up on my community.

Black Americans in particular are largely taught (by whites) that Africans "sold out their own," which engenders an animosity and spitefulness towards the Motherland that is both indicative of Kilmonger's fury and a bulwark against true African consciousness and solidarity in the wake of modern sociopolitical dynamics, but again it fundamentally doesn't make sense the moment you are able to conceive of Africa as a continent with literally thousands of different cultures who for most of their existence had no need to unite under a banner of skin color, because racism and thus our current understanding of race are specific social constructs that only came to exist to justify colonialism and divide the proletariat.
