As someone who used to be called a "bleeding heart leftie", I sadly feel the same.

It's because they aren't. They're just reactionaries. Being for "basic human decency", "solidarity" and "doing better" doesn't mean anything, anyone can claim this. They call themselves leftists because they oppose what is identified as the right and that's it. There's no other organizing principle other than who they're against. Which as we see daily can be anyone. Especially those who they assumed were always on their side on everything. It doesn't matter if they changed their view suddenly because they saw a new four hour YouTube, everyone else should have shifted too. They're ignorant for not doing the work and reading the theory like they did.

Think about their top intellectual, who has at least three times articulated her utopian ideal and never once gotten to the stage where she explains where any of the stuff comes from. Never has she been able to articulate how it's any different from the now she refuses to partake in. Her answer to how it's supposed to scale to more than a family is that there should be less people. And the entire thing is seemingly based around her belief that it will cause people to like her rather than think furries are weird.

Is this leftism? I can't see how it's any kind of philosophy. The animating principle of almost all the thought on there is that every person should be able to get whatever they want at all times without any effort and it's everyone else's duty to supply this. I can't see how this forms a philosophy at all, let alone an ideology or political position. Who couldn't say this? The only "philosophical" stance it takes is that it asserts that it's de-facto Good to do this. Which from the perspective of the person demanding it is a duh. What's in it for me? Uh, shutting up and not offending me the center of the universe?

About the only thing that ties any of it to traditional leftism is that leftism has always been quick to fanciful utopianism but that seems not to be the defining component of it, there was always some principle to why the utopia was articulated. This doesn't have any of that other than the author thinks it would be so and doesn't care that it would be hell for everyone else. You enduring hell for me is just basic human decency since otherwise I have to endure the hell that is me not getting what I want.

I know most people are well aware the NYT is no beacon of progressive thought - to say the least - but this is a shockingly textbook example of ratfucking, with the paper of record bending over backwards to work with and protect far-right sources to try and smear a Muslim democratic socialist via stoking racial animus (and also playing into anti-affirmative action beliefs on the right.) Take this as an example of the kind of lengths institutions will go to to smear Middle Eastern and leftist public figures, and remember it going forward. The NYT do hitpieces on anyone who is pro Palestine or pro trans. It's a conservative rag with nice font.

This is ultimately more a story because it's so wild I feel compelled to share it.

I currently live in a group home (5 more weels, 5 more weeks...) and as part of it they do some life skill classes. Most are useless but ultimately harmless, usually feeling like they're aimed at 10 year olds instead of adults. But today...today was special.

They brought in an "eco therapist". He talked about getting back to nature to help with mental health. However what he was really suggesting was just the most stereotypical red neck, uber masculine activities you can think of. Fishing, hunting, shooting, car shows, gun shows, monster trucks, etc.

I've never been an outdoors type, so I was open and honest about not really being interested in it. He eventually responded with "your name must be short for [feminine version of my name]". I was taken aback and simply said "that's quite the assumption to make".

I'm trans but not out, so he wasn't WRONG, it is short for that, but it was out of nowhere and clearly meant to be an insult in a "girls hate manly stuff" kind of way.

He then ignored me for the rest of the class including brushing off my suggestion of something sporty I'd enjoy doing, after asking for any suggestions (archery).

He also told us some insane stories like how he circumvented having a gun in a sober living home, and how he makes his own silencers and he was mad about having to register them.

But I truly just don't get why people get so personal about someone else not enjoying what they're into.
