Once Donkey Kong comes out next week, Astro Bot is going to be fully exposed for how mid of a platformer it really is and how it didn’t deserve all those GOTY awards.

The mechanics honestly seem interesting, but I cannot with the aesthetic. People tell me it's actually wholesome, it's actually wholesome. But all I see are SSR pack openings where they do like two closeup boob shot angles before the card reveal or the weirdo low camera shooting up angle during actual races. And of course the ick of "training" girls horses.

It's relatively wholesome for what it is, considering any other anime girl gacha game. But people recommending it that way should make no mistake: it still is what it is.

That is ironic, given that is one of the few Japanese otaku franchises where THEY DISCOURAGE THE LEWD.  They have even battled the fandom for it, to the point that there is little UmaMusume lewd art compared to other way less successful gachas and animes.

Because the girls are based from IRL race horses, they need to get permission from their owners who are ultra rich or Yakuza and something I know for a fact is that horse owners tend to love the shit out of their horses (specially if they made them money), so they often demand that they don’t made them
lewd. 

So if you really feel that the game is lewd or do risky shoots beyond what is mainstream acceptable… that’s on you.

I don't think it's quite so simple. Let's say a user said something transphobic. 3 trans mods say yes, month long ban. But 1 non trans mod doesn't see the transphobia. In this hypothetical situation you'd want a warning or a shorter ban?

The solution to this problem as always is having more trans members of staff

I'm surprised it's been such a hit here of all places. There's something deeply gross to me about a game where human(?) women are cast in the role of racehorses for other humans to train, manage and generally treat like pets.

They are not based on IRL women but on race horses (both male and female), in game they are treated like a fantasy human race that have animal ears and tails, and not, they are not considered pets but the IP made them like a bizarre mix of professional athletes/idols (mostly the athletic part). You don’t play as their “owner” (they have normal families in game) but as their trainer.

Not telling you there isn’t the usual Moe anthropomorphication that Japan loves so much, but there is a reason why is resonating with the mainstream. 

I remember hearing about this show several years ago, back in college. It's not wholly unsurprising. Love Live! fizzled out a bit, and now this is filling the niche for idol gachas now, lol.

Love live had the chance to get really big in the west, but Japan is gonna Japan. To see their virtual Idol branch you need a phone App.  Also, westerners prefer the less rotatory cast of characters and their games LAUNCHING IN TIME BEFORE GETTING SHUT DOWN!

The horse girl game is enjoyed by normies. It's actually a rather tame sports training sim, the kind that used to be made on PC regularly back in the day.

That being said, it's gacha, the ultimate evil. I personally enjoy the memes, for what it's worth... but I'll never touch a gacha game. Seen too many horrors IRL.

Im more weirded out by sanitized/targeted gambling with production values. The skeez factor. A lot of gacha just uses addictive design in the background but here its like, nah its horse racing haha. In a way that might make it the most honest.

Horse racing is confusingly popular here. You’d get ads on trains showing families goes to gamble on horse racing. Arcades have gigantic elaborate mechanical miniature horse racing setups right next to a set of recliners for virtual horse racing. People randomly bring up that Seabiscuit movie from 20 years ago.
