Fan works using LLM's and GenAI opens the door to more people being comfortable with/accepting it, until there's nothing remaining but slop and then then the big names in the industry now don't have to fight a PR battle to use GenAI in their $80 titles. On top of that, the point of doing fanworks is to be creative. What, exactly, is creative about opening a prompt and typing "Jennifer Hale but I don't have to pay her"?

Also: there's a WORLD of difference between asset ripping from other games (which is often at least explicitly credited, at least in the Doom community!) and using GenAI shit. You are muddying the waters.

I’m a fan of this one who has clearly never watched sports.

This is also them arguing in defense of an obvious fallacy. A top-tier female athlete isn't necessarily less good than any male, but she'd never make a team or place because she'll never be as good as the top tier males. The same as just any random male is not ever going to be as good as the top tier ones. That's who they both need to outperform, not just "someone who is assigned male at birth." A team of Caitlin Clark's (or maybe just the one) would demolish The Bire basketball squad, but they'd never make a men's team. They're trying to argue that the latter precludes the former by obscuring the individual women and men by switching between an average and the whole. It's the same kind of inherent confusion they make when they try to assert sex is a spectrum by showing some women are taller than the average man as if this means anything.

They're constantly arguing against the very reason women's sports exists, because when you limit it to women, women have a chance against other women. They think it's better to be dishonest with women and tell them they can be as good as top tier men as if they won't discover this is untrue instantly. Especially if their only path to any places is by having to outperform those men.

Also, I like the framing of this because it raises the possibility that they could be as good as a male mistakenly or deliberately assigned female at birth. As if the assignation alone determines the likely ability of the athlete. So just assign everyone female at birth and that will level the playing field of athletic ability. They don't have a way to argue against this because they reject the idea that the assigning has anything to do with anything material. Even as it takes just one step to show how absurd the reasoning is. They believe labels determine reality rather than being attempts to describe reality, and not just on this, Nepenthe was recently arguing that position on a completely separate topic. One reason they're so obsessed with language usage uber alles.

I guess to elaborate a little more - this is part of what is so frustrating with Avatar. If Cameron would just actually listen and respond appropriately, there could be a lot of good in these films. But it's all thoroughly tainted by his pigheadedness. I know the town he comes from, the native population is big there. I know he knows what's wrong with these movies. I know he knows what he should be doing here. What I don't know is why he doesn't - he can still have his vision and it would be better for it. We would be able to appreciate those good aspects without the baggage.

I enjoy the movies from a technical standpoint, but the movies are pretty much just another variation of the white savior trope. Black, brown, and native people can't solve big problems without a white savior in some capacity. The movies do not inspire me at all on a deep level. In fact the only way I can enjoy the movie is by not thinking too hard and just keeping things very surface level like watching a movie from the 1940s.
