Even though it will never happen, I would be morbidly curious to see someone do a study on the political leanings of parents of children who identify as trans.

There's a decent number of parents who would rather have a trans child than a gay one. That one rather famous "activist" trans kid's mother abused him out of fear he was gay, now she's a "proud" mother of a daughter. There's a couple other evangelical activists who seem similar if they don't have the admission like that parent.

Trails in the Sky The 1st, the remake of the 2004 PC game, is coming out in a month and the demo came out a couple of days ago. Since the remake was announced to be localized by GungHo, a company that has never worked on this franchise before, I was incredibly concerned with the quality of the localization when compared to the original, beloved one by XSeed for the original version that you can still purchase on Steam. Now that the demo is out, it feels like my fears were founded, but not in the way I thought.



The clarify, the localization, in a vacuum, is "Fine". It's accurate to the original Japanese script... and nothing more. Now my goal here isn't to argue about localization quality with a bunch of weebs. I personally think that as long as the original intent is intact, localizers should be encouraged to punch up the dialogue however much they want to make it more entertaining and that sticking 1:1 with the Japanese results in dry and bland scripts.



The main character of the game, Estelle Bright, has a ton of great lines in the English localization that turned her into such a beloved character in the English-speaking Trails fandom that will now be entirely gone.







But that's all beside the point of this thread.



No my problem is with consistency.



Since the Remake's website went up, there were already problems present. The character of Scherazard, whose title in English has been "Silver Streak" for years, was now called:







And the title "Divine Blade", used extremely often throughout the entire series was translated as







Both of these translations are "more accurate" to the original Japanese text but they're a far cry from what every other game in the series has used in English for these terms. Now to GungHo's credit, the website now says the proper translations for both of these that are in-line with the rest of the series. But this change came after an outcry from fans pointing the differences and how these terms being called something else would be confusing to new players who want to play the rest of the series. There's no guarantee that they bring the same attention to different terms used throughout the series.





Which brings us to the demo, released a couple of days ago.











These are two NPCs in Rolent named "Areum" and "Aria" and they are actually quite familiar to longtime Trails fans... Except most won't realize it. Their original names were "Armand" and "Elie" and they have a whole understated subplot that goes throughout Trails in the Sky and its sequel where they meet fall in love and get married.











Now their names being different does not actually matter as far as Trails in the Sky goes but they're not just in Trails in the Sky.







There they are, baby in tow, in Trails to Azure, three games later and with an entirely different cast. They have a whole sidequest dedicated to them and the official localization calls them "Armand" and "Ellie", just like the original games did. You likely wouldn't even know these are the same characters without the names being the same and that entire connection to the Sky games is lost to anyone playing through the series in order. It's not like Azure will be remade any time soon either, if at all.



It's far from the only change as well, many NPCs have entirely different names(some of which aren't even close, like "Claire" now being "Cruse") and important plot locations are different as well (Esmelas Tower is now "Jade Tower") that dot the setting.



Now if you're not familiar with the franchise. you're probably thinking "Well what does it matter? It's just some faceless NPCs, who cares if their name isn't consistent across games?" and to that I say you'd be right with literally any other series. But Trails thrives on its NPCs. Every single one has a unique name and storyline going on while all of the important plot shit is going on and you see these NPCs grow and change along with the main characters. Some show up in almost every single of these thirteen+ games. Some show up after not appearing for a long time. The NPCs are what make this series special and GungHo clearly didn't catch that. You need that attention to detail and consistency to do this series justice.



Of course this is all just based on the demo. It's possible the name changes are just isolated incidents and not indicative of the overall attention to detail... but I doubt it. There are other, bigger, instances of a lack of consistency in this localization as well, such as the pronunciation of the setting of the game, "Liberl", being pronounced as "Liberal" against all sense of logic, decency, and about ten other games worth of pronunciations.



tl;dr, I have absolutely no faith that GungHo paid any attention to how other companies localized the games when it comes to the small stuff in the Trails in the Sky Remake and the small stuff is what makes this series great.

Obviously not giving out review copies is in general pretty sus, but this case feels almost unique and impossible to extrapolate anything from. Other than that maybe, just maybe, devs don't enjoy dealing with the whole marketing aspect of the business. Yes they could hire someone to do that, but they don't need to, they are loaded, they can afford not to care about the thing that most developers do not care about. Some of us are probably cheering them on because they got that bag, and this proves that they can make games on their own terms. Yay success!
