You can't trust what Melody says about what's difficult or not.  She'd find applying for a job at Dairy Queen an excruciatingly painful task.  She owns a guitar, named herself after the instrument, yet can't play it at all and considers picking it up once a month to practice an impossible feat.  The barometer here cannot be trusted.  Much like Nepenthe, who admitted that she views everyday existence as unbearably hard, any criticism of 'the system' is just a projection of her outlook and perspective for her, not for what it is in reality.  They need help on a personal level to figure their shit out and move on.  Everyone needs help once in a while, and there's no shame in that.   Maybe some medication to reduce the edge, maybe some low-cost therapy to challenge their assumptions and hold them accountable for acting in a way that will get them better so they feel empowered.  Not circling the same drain, surrounding themselves with people who enable their delusions and reinforce their misery.  I don't necessarily blame people who are hurting and aren't getting help to know how to get out of it - it's easy to be caught in an environment where sympathy and validation are what you think you need.  But if anyone came along to shake them out of it, they'd block them out.  Being open-minded is the first step, and they won't do it.  Thus concludes my presentation

I think some people would be better off if they had hobbies. Like obvi for the people making such a big stink about it, it's their job, they make money on this feigned outrage, but like I think if more people had hobbies (or friends, or families, or jobs of their own), they wouldn't have such a vast emptiness in their lives that they get sucked into this fake outrage over a corporate logo.

As for a recent development, I recall this chapter cover drawing the ire of so many trans activists because Oda dared to draw the character they tried so hard to claim as a trans man with the other women and girls of the series. This cover was like the death blow to the whole "Yamato is trans" debates that plagued the fandom ever since that character was introduced. 
 
 
 
Oda's "pro-trans" viewpoint pretty much boil down to him being a fan of Rocky Horror Picture Show like everyone else.

People are complex, and good people sometimes do shitty things. I don't think people are as black and white as "are good" or "are cowardly asshole pieces of shit".

He's extremely nice and positive, which makes him a great friend and person to be around, but is extremely accommodating as a result of that, which puts him in a bad position to condemn people and organizations that deserve it.

I just don't think that the internet ever thinks particularly deeply about peoples' characters. People are either saints or evil assholes, and that's just not how humans actually work.



Otherwise wonderful people have disappointed me deeply in my own life. I have done the same to others. We're not perfect, but not everyone who does something we disagree with is an unredeemable asshole. We should still be held accountable for our actions, whatever they are. (but we can also grow, learn and be better)



I do also think a lot of people think people aren't capable of change and growth, and are far too willing to condemn people for past actions without ever considering that maybe they can change and be better.
