I usually stick to anime conversations with my friends/spaces that generally have people who are into shoujo/josei/BL and might have a gaming or anime subforum or channel to avoid attacks. I'm sad to see how increased visibility for spaces for women, people of color and/or LGBTQ+ folks to feel safe and discuss their perspectives on sexism, objectification, representation, etc. has just lead to more hostility since now incels just want to drive everyone else out of nerdy spaces.

Also, , is Era about anything but trying to drive people they don't like out of nerdy spaces? And then the rest of society?

The group Queers for Palestine — Ottawa (Q4P) halted the parade "with the permission" of the grand marshal, the organization said in a press release issued Sunday afternoon just as the parade was stopped.

"This is what a village looks like!" protesters chanted from Parliament Hill, referencing the "We are a village" theme that Capital Pride was using for 2025.

Q4P issued several demands for the organizers, Capital Pride, including that the group hold a "boycott, divestment and sanctions" town hall and commit to an ongoing cultural and academic boycott of Israel.

They also demanded Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and other elected officials apologize for the 2024 boycott of Capital Pride and called on them to "stand with us and all oppressed peoples, including Palestinians."

Today in Ottawa (unceded, unsurrendered Algonquin land):

Queers for Palestine - Ottawa - with full support from Grand Marshal Patience Plush, who invited our contingent of hundreds to march at the front with them - halted the Capital Pride Parade.

This Village claimed that space - to say loud and clear that we have fought too hard to be bullied into silence by Zionists and genocide-supporting politicians.

We danced, sang, and chanted.

And we presented our demands:
* For Capital Pride to be brave, public, and transparent to the community about the commitments they have made, and about their pro-Palestine values.
* And for Mayor Mark Sutcliffe to come and apologize to the community for boycotting Pride last year, due to its pro-Palestine stance - and to pledge his support to our community and to all oppressed peoples, including Palestinians.

The mayor had a choice. He could come up to talk to the folks leading the parade, or he could leave the parade.

Instead, he let Capital Pride cancel our parade under the artificial time limit of 20 minutes, imposed by Capital Pride.

The Mayor has no business even participating in our Pride, let alone weighing in on when it disperses.

In the end, our Village took the streets and marched back into Centretown - into our historic village. Cops refused to block traffic along the way. Our union allies, the workers, set up lines and helped see us home.

We celebrated. We protested. We took our Pride back without fear.

We love this queer and trans community in this city.

We will never betray our queer community globally.

We will never stop fighting for our queer kin in Gaza and Palestine, and as queer people, we will NEVER turn our backs on oppressed and colonized people across the world and right here on Turtle Island.

The people united will never be defeated!

Capital Pride said Q4P was marching as a guest invited by the parade grand marshal and had met with festival organizers throughout the summer.

But on the day of the parade, Q4P "refused to have a meaningful discussion about how to move forward," Capital Pride said, adding that street closures were only permitted until 4 p.m.

"After over an hour of attempting to resolve the stoppage, it became clear that Q4P was unwilling to engage in a good faith conversation and was insistent on misrepresenting our discussions," the statement read.

“We had staged a disruption of the parade to say our demands to both Capital Pride’s executive director and board of directors and to the mayor,” Emily Quaile of Queers for Palestine Ottawa told CTV News Ottawa.

“We were looking for apologies from the mayor, in particular, for boycotting last year and for encouraging other powerful institutions to boycott the parade. This year he is back, even though Capital Pride says their values articulated in last year’s statement are still valid. And we asked the mayor to come up and apologize to us and hear from us, the community …. that we stand in solidarity with Palestine and to participate in a Queer march isn’t for his political gain. It’s to support us and if we support Palestine as we do, then he needs to get on board with that.”

In 2024, Capital Pride issued a letter which condemned both "the acts of terrorism" committed on Oct. 7 and Israel's "endless and brutal campaign in Gaza," which it said had caused the deaths of "innocent Palestinians."

The Jewish Federation of Ottawa called the statement "antisemitic" and said it would boycott the Pride parade in response.

Other groups and individuals withdrew their support and sponsorship from some Pride Month events, including Sutcliffe.

The parade went ahead regardless, but this year the statement was removed from Capital Pride's website.

Capital Pride executive director Callie Metler told CBC last week that the removal was part of a website update but that it still stood by its "principles and values."

However, the organization has faced a campaign by Q4P to restore the statement and recommit to supporting Palestinians.

Capital Pride, the group that organizes Pride Month in Ottawa, said it removed the statement as part of an "online refresh" aimed at focusing on this year's theme of "We are the village."

Queers for Palestine says it represents 70 organizations calling on Capital Pride to reaffirm the statement.

"Capital Pride needs to choose between standing with us and standing with the institutions that boycotted and pressured them last year," Masha Davidovic, a member of Queers for Palestine — Ottawa, told CBC's All In A Day on Monday.

"It's really clear that overwhelmingly, the feeling of our community is that solidarity values and Pride as a protest is really what they want to see from our prides more and more, especially at times like this," she said.

Capital Pride had hoped to avoid the controversy it stirred during last year's Pride Month when it issued a polarizing "solidarity with Palestine" statement that provoked a backlash.

The statement included four "commitments" relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including pledges to recognize the "ongoing genocide" in Gaza, integrate a boycott list into its sponsorship reviews, host a "queer Arab showcase" and call for a ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages and increased humanitarian aid.

Some Jewish groups have welcomed Capital Pride's efforts to mend bridges. The Jewish Federation of Ottawa will be returning to this year's Pride parade, according to federation president Adam Silver.

"We acknowledge that Capital Pride leadership has met several times with queer and ally Jewish leaders in our community and taken important steps to rebuild trust," Silver wrote in a statement to CBC.

He continued: "[W]e are encouraged by Capital Pride's focus on ensuring that every member of Ottawa's 2SLGBTQ+ community can participate safely and with dignity, including those who are proudly Jewish."

It's a book so it doesn't really matter but I always read that scene as life finds a way.

Hammond thought he was in complete control but the Dilophosaurus mating meant he wasn't. Every dinosaur could breed, even the ones who may or may not have had frog DNA. Hammond was not in control, far from it.
