ok first of all, wording, standing "against" your rights??
secondly, you don't have a right not to get fired or not to get your show cancelled
you were the ones championing this fact for years and years
"they're showing you the door"

Is it really the same when this president and administration have shown they will go after any high profile cases of companies or organizations showing even the tiniest bit of spine against what they say or do? This isn’t exactly an organic consumer driven change being made.

The amount of Reseterians who are going to be quietly miffed when they don't pass enough to be rounded up.
That haircut looks familiar...

what do you mean by "go after," though? it's all talk so far, they haven't used government powers to fire anyone they didn't already have the power to fire
trump has been saying various news orgs and TV shows should be cancelled or shut down for 10 years, and has been saying various people need to be fired for just as long, and as long as he doesn't wield presidential power in implementing that by force, I would think it's the same protected speech anyone else has to express opinions

Well, to start;
He used executive orders to target law firms that either represented his opponents or employed people who were publicly outspoken against him.
He threatened to pull the funding from NOAA over their continued use of the proper name for the Gulf of Mexico, he also had the AP banned from the White House pool of reporters for the same reason.
He threatened funding for multiple universities who allowed pro-Palestine protests or had DEI programs
Trump called for ABC to lose its broadcast license over fact checking during one of the debates last year, he also sued CBS for $10 billion over the way they edited an interview with Kamala Harris. That complaint was specifically referenced in the fcc investigation into the skydance/paramount merger. The fcc also received a complaint last year about equal time for candidates in non news programming against NBC. All of these complaints were dismissed by the fcc during Bidens term for likely representing first amendment challenges and all were revived by trumps fcc chair because they don’t care about violating the first amendment.
Trump revoked secret service protection for multiple people who have spoken out against him including John Bolton, Mark Miley, Mike Pompeo, Kamala Harris, Bidens children, and Anthony Fauci.
All of these things were done to punish speech. He’s proven time and time again that he will go after anyone who says or does something he doesn’t like. And while many are struck down for being illegal you really don’t think that has a chilling effect on the speech of high profile people who oppose him? Not everyone wants to or can afford the expensive defense required when they’re targeted by the most powerful person in the “free” world.
Not even Nixon removed secret service protection from his enemies.

I have to admit, the Kimmel stuff does look to be more than typical cancel culture
The broadcaster then reacted with self-censorship (something places like Resetera used to tell me doesn't exist)

sure, he and his administration are pieces of shit using every tool they can, I didn't say trump values freedom of speech
but currently those tools don't include an ability to use government power to remove kimmel or his show
you said "it isn't the same" and " this isn’t exactly an organic consumer driven change being made," so I was referring to this specific event, and not like secret service protection
it likely is a consumer driven change, or one rooted in not alienating consumers:

It's like they have some kind of fetish for coming up with "solutions" that would always make the problems they're upset about worse.

Nothing exists in a vacuum, if you don’t think other examples of this president and administration using their station to violate the first amendment have any bearing on other perceived violations of the first amendment I don’t know what else to say
Carr also says this is just the start.

And I would simply say we're not done yet with seeing the consequences of that

Glad the boycott started after I got back from Tokyo Disney. Would’ve sucked to miss out.
Also, would boycott Disney+, but my credit card pays for it so I’ve essentially already been getting it for free. That counts, right?

I went to Japan in June and we planned on going, but we ended up deciding against it to do a day trip to Yokohama.

Revoking licenses that do or don’t exist isn’t trumps only lever to pull to get what he wants. I’m sure Disney/ABC are far more familiar with potential threats to their business than any of us would be. If they are this quick to react to something fairly benign, Kimmel didn’t even say the shooter was maga, just that maga was wishcasting this guy to be anyone but one of them, which to be fair so was the left. If trump wasnt president I can almost guarantee Kimmel would still be on air and that’s where the problem lies. Companies are bending over backwards to make sure they don’t offend his fragile ego and invoke his wrath. And that’s not how anyone should be reacting to the president of the United States. That’s how you react to a despot or a dictator.
