As a (former) high school English teacher in Oklahoma, I've railed against him publicly, privately and in the classroom. I even put banned books in my classroom library and told parents to complain to him if they had a problem. But I worked in a district too small for him to notice. Thankfully, I'm moving to a new state next month with better educator support.

You don't say what state you're in or whether or not you have a union. In any case you should seek advice from a lawyer who has experience in education. You probably won't keep your job, but you can get specific advice on how to get another position.

ETA I've never heard of a contract liquidation fee and I've never heard of one district controlling whether or not another district hires you. That's where you need legal advice.

That’s a lot of personal sharing for a classroom. A lot of students don’t understand nuance and can distort messages. I share very little and that works for me.
I’m sorry for the blowback but go ahead and resign and try again in another district. You really can’t go back once they ask for a divorce.

There's a lot at play here. How long were you with the district? Are you part of a union? Were you tenured? I can't lie. This shows extremely poor judgement. It might be fightable based on union and tenure status, but I wouldn't want to fight to stay somewhere that I wasn't wanted. I would just keep applying and not mention being asked to resign unless you're directly asked. And obviously you can't use this district as a reference.

I agree with the advice here. I am a retired teacher, school administrator with 25 years experience from Maryland. I was a union member during my entire career. I would first talk with your Union representatives. Also, their attorney. Part of their benefits is legal advice and representation if something like this happens, even if you are in the wrong. I pray that you are a Union member! If not, seek out an attorney for a consultation at least. I agree that it’s advisable to leave if you are not wanted. In my experience, it never went well for employees when they fought back. Good luck!

A former Okmulgee High School student has filed a lawsuit against the school, the district, and two former teachers, alleging that after falling asleep in a classroom, she was awakened to find the pair having sex just feet away from her.

“She was in there while two teachers were having sex on the teacher's desk," said the student's attorney, Don Smolen.

The lawsuit states that two years ago, the student was in Denise Bowen's family and consumer science class, and since it was near the end of the school year, students were allowed to move around between classrooms.

“The teacher just kind of let the students do whatever they wanted, and she just happened to lay on the floor and fall asleep," Smolen said.'

According to the lawsuit, the student claims she was woken up by Bowen and the middle school basketball coach, Jason Fox, as their encounter turned increasingly sexual and the two began having what appeared to be sexual intercourse.

Smolen told NewsChannel 8 that the alleged incident was brought to the school's attention and an investigation was launched by Okmulgee Public Schools.

However, the lawsuit says both employees resigned before that investigation could be completed.

I'm 33 years-old and left my journalism career of 13 years to begin teaching in the classroom this year. You've got plenty of time to change your career. Do what makes you happy.

I'm a teacher in Duncan.

I chose between being a journalist and a teacher when leaving high school. I went with the latter and spent 15 years in the business. But after meeting my wife, who is a teacher, and seeing several friends go from journalism to teaching, I decided to make the jump.

Thankfully, it was a great decision. The pay is better, the benefits are better, the schedule is better. But most importantly, I enjoy spending time with the students. I'm a high school English teacher, and seeing the students finally grasp a story and why it's important, or come to appreciate a work makes the occasional discipline issues worthwhile. My two years in the classroom are much more satisfying than 15 years as a reporter.

My wife is starting grad school next month to be a librarian in Oklahoma and our own "wonderful" state superintendent, Ryan Walters, is already using rhetoric like this to go after Tulsa Public Schools. I told her last night we might need to move to a new state as teachers if she wants to maintain a nice librarian position.

My wife and I, both teachers, decided we're moving out of Oklahoma next May. Just cannot stand the bullshit that Ryan Walters is doing at the OSDE. Education in this state was already bad enough. Now, it's even worse than ever.

Did they decide this because they got caught fucking in the classroom? I can't tell if this guy is Jason Fox or not.

I should have known that it wouldn't pass when I was only number 16 at my precinct at 4:45 p.m. last night, and the only other people I saw were all old. Then I saw local Facebook groups flooded with boomers bragging about how they made sure to vote it down. So tired of this country in which people who won't even be impacted by the consequences of their votes in the years and decades to come get to dictate so much policy while younger voters only seem to materialize when it's a national movement.

I have a med card and will continue to maintain my med card, even if recreational was approved. Oklahoma is fortunate in that it's medical laws are so lax compared to others, but the pearl clutching and decrying of "the children!" from law enforcement groups, church groups, and Kevin Shitt himself were nauseating. The additional revenue would have been amazing. But I'm sure the Legislature is still going to push forward with its draconian tax cuts this session to further gut education as soon as the next downturn hits.

As a user, I can say CHS is a very real thing. I've had four episodes in the last four years. The first was hours after I received my initial Covid vaccine and flu vaccine at the same time. I was down sick for four straight days, projectile vomiting literally anything that hit my stomach in the most violent way possible. And then there were the cramps — the absolute worst. My wife said the pain I was describing was worse than what she would endure during her worst periods. I was doubled up in the floor crying at times. The only thing that would temporarily help was a scalding hot shower.

I was so weak, I couldn't stand. I passed out twice, once in the bathroom and hit my chest on the corner of a cabinet door and severely bruised it. I lost 30 pounds in four days. When we went to the emergency room, they couldn't do anything for me. Just diagnosed me as a diabetic because my blood sugar was at 450. They gave me fluids and Benadryl for the cramps. I recovered and kept using because i didn't know any better.

The next time, it hit about seven months later. I would wake up for about two months each day with nausea and cramps and a complete lack of appetite unless I used. I came down sick for five days doing the same thing. I lost about 25-30 pounds then again. But I started researching what it could be and discovered CHS support groups on Facebook and Reddit.

I've had two more episodes, each about four days. I suck on pedialyte popsicles and use the shower frequently. I recognize I get attacks if I use too frequently, which usually ends up smoking once or twice a day and using a vape pen during times of high stress. But I've cut back to only weekends and I'm doing better. But there are people who if they use even once, will be triggered.

So don't immediately blow this off as propaganda. I'm very much in favor of legalization. Having moved to Kansas from Oklahoma this summer, I miss having it so easily accessible and legal. But I also recognize there are very valid health concerns that people need to be aware of.

Yes, I was an undiagnosed autistic student who moved across the country and struggled to make friends. I was bullied relentlessly from third grade through 10th grade. During my sophomore year, I just started snapping on people. I banged a student's head on the gym floor repeatedly until he was bleeding. I slammed another student's head into the bus window and threw him into the floor and choked him until he nearly passed out. I repeatedly got in fights and repeatedly started throwing hands at the slightest provocation. The bullying stopped. People became afraid of me.

That shit still stays with me. I have severe trust issues with people and horrible social anxiety. Part of it is my autism, but a lot of it comes from how I was bullied in school. Teachers were useless and didn't say anything beyond the old, "stick and stones..." adage. That's why I'm extremely anti-bullying as a teacher. I preach about it all the time and have often shared what I went through and what happened. I got the bullying to stop -- by seriously hurting people. I was never disciplined too harshly, but today, what I did would get charges pressed against them. I've heard my students even get onto each other about saying certain things because I don't like it. Hopefully, I can help some students avoid what I went through.

When I lived in Chicago, yeah. People would ask me for directions constantly. I think the way I walk makes me look like I know where I'm going, and people say I look fairly approachable.
