Didn't know whether to make this a public thread or a private thread based on the subject.

Pretty simple question, do you enjoy shipping fictional characters LGBTQ+ ERA?

I personally enjoy shipping, as someone who loves and pushes for more and more LGBTQ+ representation, especially lesbian and wlw in fiction (especially fully confirmed and canon rep), I find being able to speculate, wish and talk about what I would love to see and what I'd wish would happen very comforting and enjoyable, especially in franchises I want so much to have more fully open reps like Pokémon. I don't often get into shipping debates online outside of my friend group so I don't engage in shipping wars stuff or big fan discussions on popular works.

In the past two years though, and in 2025 especially, I've been finding a lot of joy in the wholesome fan art side of wlw shipping, their is so much and adorable art being made out there. In a year that I've been really struggling mentally from the constant bombardment of trans hate coming from both the US and UK; and the revival of the Autism scare (which thankfully seems to be way more muted) and just the constant spiral of horrible news and atrocities, it's been really nice to have something just unaffected by that, somewhere calm and safe.

It helps that I find other women people happy makes me feel happy and it doesn't really matter to me what the art is from, whether works I love like She-Ra, Sailor Moon, Owl House etc; or works I've never watched or played like ZZZone, Genshin Impact (seriously, what is going on in these games, I see so much of these two), Arcane, Hazbin Hotel or RWBY, as long as it's fun, sweet, adorable it doesn't matter. Whether it's Tifa x Aerith art, Geeta x Rika (Pokémon), Bridget (Guilty Gear), F-Byleth x Edelgard (it's impressive just how popular this couple is even to this day, so many wlw came to love Edelgard, me included!), Pauline x Rosalina etc etc. Been really enjoyable in a miserable year.

At the moment the biggest manga and anime series is Demon Slayer, which is very much pinned in that specific Japan imagery. Coupled with the general anemic response to modern Hollywood media, it makes sense to double down on what people want. I think sometimes games are just reactive to trends in other media. The DS Zelda games had Jack Sparrow in them because those Pirates movies were popular.

Honestly, I think I get you point across, but I would mention there a tons of Japanese games that never got a wide released because they were to Japanese, so is not like they begin doing it just now.

I think there is something cool about how another culture depicts another, so is interesting how OG Silent Hill resonated with westerners.

What I suspect, in the case of SH specifically, is that Konami really has not the confidence to pull the same effect without some western studio helping, as SH Short Message wasn’t exactly received as another PT. They also, correctly, think that westerners are more open to Japanese culture, so a SH in full Japanese setting is less risk averse compared to post Silence Team years. 

They were wise to choose R07 as a writer, because while he writes a lot of stories in Japanese settings, he has some western sensibilities that doesn’t exactly share with the rest of the VN writers that generally have. Ironically, he  mentioned being pretty willing to go outside his comfort zone and write the story in a western setting, so is not like there isn’t desire to do this anymore.

Things will get shittier regardless of whether Comey is indicted or not. James Comey not getting indicted isn't going to fix this country. Trump has already openly says he'll go after political opponents. Shitty things will continue to happen. Yes, they can destroy gay marriage, they can reinstate slavery, they can start WW3. Indicting Comey is not the litmus test for whatever shitty thing Trump will do next.

If Trump doesn't indict him, he could very well live happily the rest of his life without any repercussions for what he did, while the rest of us continue to suffer. So I'm happy something bad is happening to him. Even better that it's by the hand of the man he helped. Yes, things in America will get worse and worse. James Comey had a hand in it. Funny enough, Donkey Kong had its first japanese-developed game in decades and it went the opposite direction of other Nintendo series by tripling down on its western influences. It's a game about a King Kong analogue going on a literal "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and concludes with him fighting his reptilian rival in a cityscape.

There's nothing unjust about indicting a man who gave rise to fascism in America.

You assume Hillary would have won if Comey didnt reopen the investigation. The truth is Hillary was a pretty polarizing figure and her victory was not a foregone conclusion. the country was turning rightward and trump was saying what a lot wanted to hear. Bottom line, celebrating Comey's indictment is so short sighted and frankly ignorant. It doesnt matter who it is, celebrating the sitting president prosecuting political enemies is a bad look.

Let people be happy. Are we that deep into a fascist dystopia that people can't even enjoy what little they have to look forward to?

The problem is that you guys still think Democracy still exists in this country. It doesn't. Whether we celebrate or not cannot and will not change Trump's mind. You're holding onto the illusion that we somehow have any control over the direction of the country.

I do agree with you guys that a president prosecuting their political enemies is a bad thing. No president should be allowed to do this. Tyrannical governments can't govern and will eventually collapse. If they're going to destroy something, better to tear each other apart than someone actually innocent. Don't forget John Bolton is also part of this. Creating riffs amongst themselves and letting them cannibalize each other. Many tyrannical rulers historically are killed by their own people.
