When I read that "they did everything imaginable to her" and the Era post "abused pretty badly" that was basically the first thing I thought of. Oh, they gang raped her and left her for dead. Because that's generally what you hear about whenever you read about war hostages through most of history. But that's not funny, so I changed it to execution. 

Even the fact they're doing these flotillas shows how dishonest all the narratives are. You wouldn't do this if you really believed the propaganda about Israel. You especially wouldn't do it over and over every chance you get. They know they aren't getting through, they know Israel is going to scoop them up because they have a duty to, etc. The entire point is to be as hostile to them as possible when this happens so hopefully something will happen, but not anything too bad. They know Israel won't kill them, won't disappear them, won't even really beat them.

Think about if you really believed your rhetoric, there's a genocide, a valid resistance and anything Palestinians do is moral. Why aren't they running guns? "Oh, that would be wrong, we'd get in trouble." "The weapons wouldn't get to Gaza." "People wouldn't donate to that." Yeah, I know.

While all true, you'll have to forgive me for not holding my breath regarding the masses ever caring for black bodies.

They care when we mobilize. Look at the George Floyd protests; you saw lots of non-Black folks either getting directly involved or becoming absolutely scared shitless for their lives. Outside of that, it is indeed crickets. Folks are fine with accepting our oppression as normal because our oppression underpins the economic benefits and distracting toys they are allowed to enjoy within the Core.

The lesson for Black folks then is to A.) understand that this current world does not care for our suffering and thus to stop seeking its favor and assimilation within it, and B.) Turn the short-term mobilization we are capable of into long-term political organization towards an anti-imperialist end. This is not just to force non-Black folks to confront this contradiction and make them start caring one way or another, but to finally dismantle the direct cause of our oppression and build a world that does give a damn about us on principle.

Nepenthe saw scared non-black people amidst the violence and chaos of riots and she was grinning.  She was loving it.  That's all it really comes down to.  Hurting other people.  But in the end, everyone normal has a natural revulsion to violence and disorder because most normal people have a stake in society and have something to lose.  Including other Black people.  Not her though, so it was a positive thing to see a lack of order and a lack of assimilation.

In recent weeks, I have been mulling things over as the clocks have ticked ever closer to this moment. Namely, about how I should mark what is a very important occasion for me.

For quite some time, I have worn my alcohol problems on my sleeve when discussing sensitive subjects. And, to put it mildly, I was quite the community disaster drunk, stumbling from thread to thread making quick to anger arguments and barely legible tangents.

I first started drinking in 2014, in what I would eventually come to accept was me self-medicating to numb various traumas and anxieties that I have exposited in threads I set up to express suicidal ideation in the past. Life was, for me, not a series of emotional peaks and troughs, but a continuous rock bottom as I lurched from day to day with basically nothing but the next drink motivating me onwards.

But in the middle of writing out this OP, my phone buzzed me the alert that...



...It has been precisely a year since my last drink.

I remember exactly when, where and what and it wasn't glamorous. It was a pint of cheap bitter in a miserable pub in a run down town to stop shaking and ease the anxiety spiral I was stuck in.

Now there's three reasons I wanted to make a thread about the occasion:

1) To flex the achievement.



FUCK YEAH, I'M A YEAR SOBER!!!

What is now over a year ago, I was convinced my addiction was going to drive me into an early grave. I was even told as much on several occasions by medical professionals. Yet I saw no way out of that pit, with very little professional support available to me. On a statistical basis, overcoming an addiction at a level that I suffer with was pretty unlikely. Yet, despite some extremely stressful and difficult moments, I've managed a milestone that is indescribably difficult, without any professional support.

2) I want to reach out to anyone who might be suffering with addiction, or even just worries they may be drinking a little too much, and say that as difficult as changing habits may be, it's possible. I don't want to say "If I can do it, anybody can," because I know from experience what an infuriating thing it is to be told. But I do implore people stuck in substance abuse to not feel ashamed but to seek connection, if help is available to you reach out and take it, and know it's never too late to turn your ship around.

3) I'd like to both apologise for the years of erratic behaviours I have exhibited, getting into quick to temper fights and arguments that needn't have gotten so out of control, and also express the deepest gratitude for the patience and support people have afforded me over the years while I have grappled with my alcoholism. Trying to stop my bad behaviours were a big motivator in getting my drinking under control, including the countless false starts that I made over the years. I don't know what I did to deserve the support and friends that I have made, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you.



With this all having been said, here's to a second year of sobriety, and many more to come after that!
