Matthew Chingos and Kristin Blagg, two scholars at the Urban Institute, computed “demographically adjusted NAEP scores,” examining how effective states are at educating kids after accounting for significant differences in socioeconomic status. Their analysis of the 2024 NAEP results found that Mississippi was best at educating kids in fourth-grade math, fourth-grade reading, and eighth-grade math. (In 2013, Mississippi was at the bottom of the unadjusted league table.) When I computed the correlation between these demographically adjusted scores and state spending, I found that there was none. If you’re an underprivileged kid in America, you will, on average, get the best education not in rich Massachusetts but in poor Mississippi, where per-pupil spending is half as high.

This is a recent phenomenon. Some have called it the “Mississippi miracle” or—if you include relative outperformance in states such as Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee—the “southern surge.” From 2013 to 2024, reading performance declined among fourth graders in 46 out of 50 states. In only two states, Mississippi and Louisiana, did they meaningfully improve.

You're onto something more than you realize (probably). Modern public schools make huge efforts to integrate ESL and disabled kids into the gen-ed classroom unless there is literally no other option. Disabled in this case applies to cognitive function as well as behavioral issues. 

The idea is that ESL + special ed kids do better when integrated in to the general class setting--they call it the "Least Restrictive Environment"--which seems sort of instinctually believable. The flip side that gets a lot less attention is that all of these integrated ESL & disabled students predictably drag down the averages of the general education setting. 

It's fine if societally we accept that compromise, but obviously things look fucked up when people emphasize one half of the equation while ignoring the other. 

That doesn't explain everything--the concept of Least Restrictive Environment is pretty old in the US--but "least restrictive" is subject to interpretation, and that bar can go pretty  low when schools are trying to juice their numbers (fewer formal designations of Special Education students, more "successes" for kids placed in the general environment, etc.). I don't think anyone here would be surprised by the idea that least restrictive has gotten uh...less restrictive over time.

Reading the article and the mentality of "high standards", I really hope people don't use that to mean "strips Neurodivergent students and other students of extra help to make them "learn" and suffer like the rest" (especially right wing people given the article is going after progressives while ignoring how the right wing have slowly the eroded the Education system for it's benefit) that I've seen a few times around here in the UK. It's frustrating seeing Intelligent Autistic kids getting lumped into this shit and treated like their part of the problem because they may need extra help, lessons, struggle with no fault of their own or simply are not suited to the exam system/environment (and as one of those kids, it felt embarrassing, frustrating and depressing feeling like I was behind everyone, feeling like I was "stupid", feeling different (not helped by the intense bullying) etc).
