The main takeaway is that Embracer was super irresponsible with their purchasing and Volition suffered for it. The game may not have been good, but Embracer was expecting billions of dollars from a partnership (with an unrelated company) that never happened, and they would have been able to shoulder SR's losses if the deal went through.

So because of that deal falling through, Embracer was suddenly faced with massive losses and had to start closing studios because of it.

Volition shouldn't have to die because their parent company made a mistake.

Isn't this how democracy should work though? I doubt "most of the people" are over 90, so they still have to believe that someone fast approaching that age is capable of representing their interests. Ultimately, this all comes down to the question whether we believe voters are capable of making informed decisions and it's kinda hard to say you believe in democracy, if you think that's fundamentally impossible. Of course, there are external factors here, like the media and how that is negatively affecting things, as well as the general level of education and political education in particular. Though those are factors that are hard to address, let alone fix.

Chester Bennington from Linkin Park for me. I loved listening to them but would see memes of them being a emo band all the time and dismissed this. Then Chester killed himself and it just flat showed no they were right.

Even in the cliched meme version, Emo is still a style. Not to mention that it should be obvious what the term is short for and it doesn't imply suicidal anything, the historical emo was about far more than just low level personal emotions. Linkin Park's lyrics and music aren't even about this, the early stuff is as much about the music industry along with people demanding you act as a stereotype and they increasingly wrote stupid political crap. Crawling is, and appropriately, looking it up the meaning of it is more divorced from the cliched emo label (which is about love) and more about why he actually eventually did self-unalive:

But Harvey Milk conspiracies are literally the funniest thing to bring up about Feinstein. And she campaigned on finding that body when she had been one of his political opponents.

Not to mention that we can see that the conspiracy clearly worked on you, with help of the algorithms, since "why would I find the body if I was involved in the murder" is a pretty obvious claim a conspirator would make to throw off suspicion. This is why LGBTQIA2S+ members on ResetERA.com don't feel safe.

As a hobbyist, this has been a great year.

Mass layoffs all over the industry.
Studios being forcefully shut down.
Uncertainty around game engines with the whole Unity debacle and mass layoffs at Epic (along with the information that both companies are losing money much faster than they're making it).

No offense for the ones actually affected but…   Is this your first year in the vidja industry? No? Then the only thing that seem to affect you directly is Unity shitting the bed. You are acting like massive mismanagement is something new. 

But wait, hypothetic person says! We can just rely on indies for great games! Yeah, good luck even finding out individual games exist now that Twitter is on fire (the major social media outreach for many small studios). And if people don't find out about those games, they don't sell, and those indie studios stop making games.

Not fan of Twitter or Musk, but seems that is doing fine or at least well enough to worry about how difficult is going to be using a new social media platform. The fact that you are still using RE seems to be a “you” problem.

'm as excited for a new 2D Mario game coming out as anyone, but this year is going to have far-reaching consequences down the road for the game industry. Lost jobs, destroyed studios, wasted time as developers scramble to switch game engines, and the increased difficulty in small developers reaching the audiences that would love their games
