What is selfish about wanting healthcare for everyone, the minimum wage to be a living age, protecting the environment, ensuring the police are accountable for their actions, reducing income inequality, etc.? Players have been expecting more out of Pokemon since it started on the Gameboy. Those of us who have been with this series for a long time now know these current sentiments are the same ones we heard when the handheld games were juxtaposed to Pokemon Snap, Gale of Darkness, Battle Revolution, and Pokken. And the belief then was that because they were games developed with the computational limitations of handhelds in mind, the jump to home consoles would result in - as people have repeated often - the series living up to its full potential.

At no point in any of this, of course, has there been any serious consideration on the possibility that GameFreak maybe has never viewed the Pokemon games as a premium experience. That perhaps maybe what Pokemon is - an A to AA tier franchise - was all it was supposed to be, it just so happens to sell substantially better than the majority of AAA and even AAAA games.

But they are selling it as a AAA one. The fans consider it a AAA one and shit talked for years others if dared to say otherwise.

Pokemon wasn't getting a pass even when it shared shelf space with MK:DS (or for a better comparison - DQ: Jokers) or RE: Revelations. What has always been true, and this dates back to the N64 days, is that those who dreamed of playing Pokemon on the big screen have attached a pedigree to the series that Game Freak (likely) never intended.

I think cultural change is inevitable because culture stems from the material world, which in turn is in a constant state of change. I guess I continue to overestimate the ways in which that change is trending towards opposition to American hegemony. And I will for once be pessimistic and say I don't know how you fix it. You can't get most "good" white people to do shit against the racism in their communities, and more and more I am coming to terms with the fact that even American minorities are more concerned with simply trying to gain their piece of the pie, to find acceptance within imperialism, than to seek liberation from it. I guess this is what happens when you kill and jail all of the actual radicals- you're left with reformist fuckbois to teach the incoming generations that salvation is found within assimilation. It feels bleak....
Or maybe this pessimism is just my menstrual cycle talking and I'll be more emotionally stable and optimistic in a day or two. But for now in the moment I just feel decidedly isolated. Again, it feels like almost no one has learned anything. Like... I don't get it. I don't understand how you can live three, four, five decades and just not grow.

In May he posted a lengthy statement on Instagram: “Some guy shouting at me from the dark didn’t really seem like the best moment to discuss the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Jonny Greenwood is married to an Israeli artist, Sharona Katan, and has worked for many years with the Israeli musician Dudu Tassa, most recently on the 2023 album Jarak Qaribak (“Your neighbour is your friend”), which features artists from Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia and Palestine.
