I've looked into this a bit, and it seems for an average income individual in the country, the tax burden on that person is almost exactly the same between most Western European countries and the US when factoring in the higher personal taxes on labor in Europe + VAT vs sales/state tax, but the average cost of healthcare being lower in Europe vs the average US healthcare cost, and the higher property taxes in the US (unless you go to a very low property tax state).   However, Americans make more money on average than Europeans so they have more disposable income, have access to a bigger market and more job opportunities, and it's definitely easier to start a business in the US.  But for someone like Nepenthe, who can't see the advantages she has, it might as well be Serbia.

Your explanation for a system needs to explain why different tax systems produce a historical tax share that's so remarkably stable over time. (The latter one going back for the EU looks just like the US one in terms of relative stability. If you add debt the US line will move up to match the EU one, we simply don't pay the taxes for things we buy with the state.) Nobody cares to do this, even the US government always (for example, both W. Bush and Obama did this, estimating it would jump to 25% as a share) forecasts tax changes as breaking dramatically from the pattern without explanation for why it will. You'd think somebody at the CBO and OMB might care that every estimate they'd ever made overestimates revenue and underestimates outlays. In 1967, the government estimated that all of Medicare would cost $12 billion in 1990. The actual figure was $98 billion. OMB has never accurately predicted the GDP change for a year. This has had no effect on how the government makes future estimates.

Yet everyone believes they can just "simply" alter the system to produce the results they expect. Both expert and "expert" alike. Historical trends predate me so they're irrelevant and I can simply assert that they support what I want to do even if there's no examples of what I want being done in human history. We just need to tax the rich at 70+% again. Like we did from 1940-1980, see history supports me so you can't question what I want. Care to be more specific? Are you referring to Florian Mueller (whose own takes have been criticized by other laywyers), or perhaps Gene Park (who isn't an IP lawyer)? Because those are the two primary sources behind the general public's understanding re: the scope and contents of these patents.

We were all getting ready to move to a brand new shinier office, taking a bunch of trainings for new stuff....my manager was blowing me up with praise about how big my bonus was looking to be and that I was basically a shoe in for promotion. And then Friday, boom. An email, a 10 minute video meeting and the whole department was axed, managers included. Like 200 people.

And the work we did was crucial too. I just don't understand at all how they think outsourcing and Ai can take over.

We are extremely lucky that we got a nice severance and I (hopefully) have time to find another job but it looks like my extremely specific specialty (T&S, mis/dis) is like...Just being dropped or outsourced now. I'm flabbergasted.
