I recently reinstalled instagram since I am trying to build my social media for my drumming career. I use it to post videos of gigs and me playing so people have somewhere to see me play if I’m trying to find gigs.

However, I’ve been scrolling on it a bit too much lately and seeing friends’ stories a lot. Honestly they all kinda make me feel like shit. Today I saw that two of my friends who I don’t really talk to anymore but used to be good friends with went to a music festival together, and it kinda made me feel bad about myself. I dunno, I just felt left out and depressed they don’t ask me to do that kind of stuff. This is one example out of many of seeing people do fun things or have huge accomplishments. I know that instagram is made for that stuff, but it makes my self esteem take a nose dive.

I feel like the majority of people who use it realize this but try to use it to constantly one-up all their followers with how cool they are. It makes me want to leave it behind except for posting videos of my drumming. I’m guessing it makes the majority of Era feel like shit?

Well, there is a lot of reasons for that. Not every single writer has the same speed in making progress in their projects, I bet you that you fawn for Stephen King even if he is worst in how many crazy stuff can he write in a short period. Many excellent writers will not write stuff for years while others will do it in a consistent basis, specially those that have mainstream projects in film and TV (like Rowling, King and even George RR Martin (the fact that he is slow in his main series is another issue altogether)).

Yes, social media is a big plot to make you feel bad. It's not that this stuff always happened but you just didn't know it before, no, it's clearly that everyone else is obsessed with outdoing each other.
