What's even more terrible and kinda buried in the lede here, is that anybody wanting to go into these fields will now have a harder time applying for financial aid.

They dismantled the Grad PLUS Loan program (Part of how I funded my grad education) and now that these aren't "professions" anymore, they're not eligible for federal loans for professional degrees such as the PLUS Loan (which is now gone) and there are now "lifetime caps" on money you can borrow from the government for education. Each of these things taking effect would have stopped/prevented me from getting my PhD last year.

They have essentially ruined the pipeline for getting more teachers, nurses, architects, accountants, etc, because now you gotta be rich to have the tuition to pay to go be one, you can't borrow via FAFSA for grad school for these professions in the same way anymore. Period.

Education has been dismantled in the USA. Having gotten my science PhD in 2024 before AI took over everyone's queries and before this shit happened, I feel like the last of a dying breed in the USA in terms of having been able to have the privilege to get a PhD. It was so hard to finish, I can't even imagine if my funding was constantly under threat because of this news.

The gulf legal gap between a MD/DO and a PA has just widened a bit when it was basically that both those on a medical case have legal authority based on their licensure for their practicing of their profession, but now I don't know what the fuck the implications are if PA isn't considered a "profession"--do you lose your legal authorities in comparison to a doctor? Might want to ask an attorney? Are there enough attorneys that would even know about this? See the lunacy in what this administration is doing to cause chaos in our society?

I was taught in engineering ethics and philosophy that professions are careers that are defined by skillful gaining of knowledge where the fruits of said studies benefit the public and are therefore bound by accountability (a governing body of some kind) and a code of ethics that holds the professionals accountable via licensure and discipline and monitoring of professionals' output to society and their adherence to the ethical principles of their profession. I.e. it's more than just a trade, or apprenticeship, or a "job", a professional degree program that awards professional degrees often trains the next generation of licensed professionals (minus some like the MBA, which may or may not lead to certifications or licensures of some kind) and teaches them their code of ethics and the regulatory bodies that will monitor them throughout their careers. This jurisdiction umbrella covers things like architects, engineers (civil, chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer, and maybe more soon), lawyers, physicians and healthcare professionals including nurses (no longer fucking real I can't believe as I'm typing this), all meet these criteria. Their signatures have legal implications, they have severe consequences for betraying the public, and if they provide goods and services to the public, they must be held accountable.

In fact, the only legal reason engineers (mechanical, chemical, electrical, engineering) can produce goods and services for the public in the USA WITHOUT an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license awarded upon passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam after getting an ABET-accredited engineering degree in said discipline you're asking for licensure...is because there is a stipulation in US legal code and ABET and state boards that unlicensed engineers can produce for the public, like an electrical engineer can work for Apple, if they are employed by a private entity. But if you make bridges, or roads, or goods for the public by working directly for a public employer, they often ask you to have your EIT/PE license because then your signature as an engineer holds legal authority in court and you can go to prison for your designs failing or lose your licensure similar to a physician or a lawyer. Having your PE license is an immense responsibility but anyway, yeah, little tidbit for all of y'all is that engineers' abilities to even hold jobs in the private sector kinda hinges on precedent of legal and ethical semantics of what constitutes the profession of engineering and whom should be able to title themselves as engineer, and if that gets dismantled overnight because a lunatic in the Oval Office decides engineers aren't professionals anymore....oh boy...

I'm so glad Hasan is doing this journey through China. It's important for people to see what it's actually like there, not just the horror stories we get told through American media and government. The incredible infrastructure and how they have risen over a billion citizens out of poverty in just a few decades is what we should be looking at. This is a country that, for all the significant and very real complaints you can make about their government, is largely improving the lives of its citizens by leaps and bounds. Meanwhile in the USA it's just capitalist hellscape from end to end. Nobody can afford a home, infrastructure is aging and terrible, no significant improvements like high speed rails that would benefit citizens, and those are just the tip of the iceberg.

Americans need to see what the rest of the world is doing so we can all come together and demand better for ourselves.

At the rate things are going, if we can't make the needed changes to make the USA more livable, we could start to see people fleeing the USA for greener pastures in the coming years. The USA refugee crisis is going to be flipped on its head: we'll be the ones fleeing, not the other way around.

Yup - I saw that video of him stating that, and it's so true. No young person in China is feeling any kind of affordability crisis because that simply doesn't exist. Meanwhile here in the states, capitalism is completely unfettered with basically no oversight and is reaching a point where the status quo is not sustainable.

It's actually insane how the government of the US seems actively hostile towards to its citizens these days. The SNAP debacle of this shutdown should have made that abundantly clear. The thing with Trump is that there's so much incompetence and graft and corruption that nobody has any time to focus on any one thing. Even the news is limited in what they can cover because there's only so many reporters and only so many minutes/pages with which to report the news. As a result, nothing can take hold and people have no time to get outraged.

It's called prioritization. it's actually pretty easy. The media's not interested in it because they have to feed the media cycle. When there's a Democrat in office, you tune it out because you have trust in them just like MAGA has trust in Trump.

So much truth about how don't feed the trolls doesn't work anymore and companies have no idea how to deal with harassment campaigns and protecting their workers e.g. Star Wars actors facing racism.

Licensure is done by the states, not the feds or it'd be an even bigger protection racket. All that self-serving nonsense you were told is because you effectively can't sue people who do public projects as they receive the exemption from liability the state does. The reason engineers don't have to be licensed in the private sector is because the protection racket hasn't captured enough state legislatures to require it, you're assuming that permission from the state is the norm for being able to do something rather than the other way around, you have the "precedent of legal and ethical semantics" entirely backwards.
