Fundamentally, it sounds like the only real solution is to move away from these "public square" spaces online that encapsulate everything and more toward a "coffee shop" model, where people can have real discussions. Ironically, it kinda feels like that's what we had prior to the advent of modern social media.

There's a lot more in the interview, for example, how the stuff gets popular on social media fundamentally shapes what our politicians look like, if more extremist content is what gets views then is it any surprise that our politics have gotten more extremist, and also how it has screwed with how news works, everyone has to engage in clickbait and all sorts of other nonsense to get anyone to pay attention, moving us away from actual news and toward bullshit. Basically, even if you try and detach our society is so centered around these platforms that you still can't get away from them.

I don't think China should invade Taiwan but they also have far more justification to than the current US strikes in latin america, and almost any US war for the past several decades.

I think a lot of folks don't understand how Taiwan came to be. It would be like during the American civil war the confederates lost but they and the rest of the world decided they get florida. (it's more complicated than that but I think a lot of folks just haven't read its history, I encourage them to).

Again, I think it's been too long to care or provide real justification for it because war should be avoided at all costs, but there are people alive in China that remember when Taiwan was part of China.

like y'know is it better to show a user everything ordered chronologically since they've last been on, or popular things of the day, or things catered directly to their tastes...I suppose you could argue that forums count as "chronologically" but it feels fundamentally different

Both movements are promising pie in the sky policies, I think  that Trumpism is trying to implement them in the most stupid way possible and the economic backdrop is so bad that normal people are not willling to entertain this stuff anymore. How the PseudoRedDems decide to play the politics game will determine if they grow the movement or grow out of it, rather than taking over the party dinosaurs. 

It will be interesting, I can agree that a lot of people will be disappointed for the meme democrats after some years, but I also feel people will still gravitate towards them over Vance and MAGA remnants, specially if Trump dies.

Saw this on Saturday night.

My first reaction with it is that I ever-so-slightly prefer it over the original in many respects, primarily because I think it handles its political themes with a lot less heavy-handedness and obvious dialogue that dates the original some, and there's a lot less copaganda in this one (I still think the themes hold up in the original more than most though as I never viewed it as about "racism" but about the intersecting vectors of oppression amongst a population oppressed in a multitude of ways.) I think the mystery aspect is a little more predictable here compared to the original's more traditional whodunnit structure, but I think the journey to get to the answer was a lot more fun and I was on board the whole way through. I also found it funnier than the original as well; pretty sure I had a constant smile on my face. However, I was annoyed by the central emotional conflict because honestly I don't think that Judy
