MEDIA LITERACY:

As every page of this thread shows, games having characters that are girls and a game or character being FOR the girls are very different things. Grace is really strongly reading as that "created to inspire protectiveness over her, you want to see her safely through" type of design oriented to men, as far as I see it.
With SHf's Hinako to use a recent example- from the start you could see a real sense that she had her own world view that was varied, flawed, and informed individual behaviors. People were trying to figure out her motivations and the source of her reactions in early showings. And I think we can now firmly put her in the "FOR the girls" camp.

Which is not to say Capcom is unaware or unconcerned of the large amount of women who like RE. Grace's co-star is extremely popular with female audiences after all.

 

Silent Hill f was written by a middle age Japanese dude that writes VN. His audience are teenage and middle age Otakus. He is a good writer and, given he worked in children protection services, he actually knows how to write young characters and their problems. But is laughable that he is and Konami are limiting themselves with “this is for the girls”  

What are you describing is not necessarily “written for me, because I’m a girl”  , but an actual character.

Still, I will advise against judging a character until the game comes out because I remember your social circle being annoyed of Hinako (another teenage girl in sailor dress  ) before the game comes out.

Yeah the RE girls are kinda just like Ellen Ripley or Sara Conner, still strong characters but clearly because the creators like/are attracted to that archetype.

Capcom have just leaned into everyone's hot nowdays, while backing away from the sillier fan service outside of games that sells skins... SF6.

Silent Hill F is how I knew I was a girl, the feeling of being repressed and misunderstood by society really spoke to me, especially when the dad yells all the time. Anyway Hinoko is also my wife now so I too am very displeased that Grace, who was looking to be everything I ever wanted and dreamed of, is now besmirched by the unnecessary inclusion of Leon. Grace was meant to be the star and Leon has just ruined all of it, the chuds will only ever talk about Leon now and even though I used to like Leon every time I see him I'll be reminded of chuds and their hate campaign against not being against Grace being the star instead of Leon.

Capcom really fumbled the bag with this reveal. Marketing department should never do this again. Once it's leaked and inside people's heads you need to get ahead of the curve and reveal it with a good trailer. They had multiple opportunities!

I'm too stupid to grasp everything that needs done, but I've seen both kids and adults just swipe down...and down...and down....for fucking ever. And they're built that way to be addictive and keep you going forever. It sure feels like a good step would forcing these companies to disallow that constant, endless scrolling. You scrolled past 10, 20, X amount of stories? You're done for now. Take a break. Even cutting someone off for a fucking minute to snap them out of that shit feels like it would help.

Parents are not capable in teaching their kids what fascism is and how to detect the rhetoric early on. It's very easy to bypass hate speech laws as they are completely ineffective against the fascist playbook. I don't see any alternative to banning it for kids. And I wonder if even that is going to have any major effect.

Fuck social media. I love this idea. We need to expand it now to time limits for all accounts. Maybe even a full 24 hour day once per week where all social media stops, so that people get off their phones, Ready Player One style!

They should regulate what's allowed on these platforms instead of who is allowed to use them.

Good baby step, we are reaping the consequences of the lack of heavy moderation of social media for too long. The current situation of the world and the growth of right wing extremism is deeply due to this.

Ironic how the actual solution would be to not allow adults on social media anymore.

It will force people underground and finding alternatives, but it won't be the ubiquitous mess that is ultimately shaping the global world order right now.

It sucks for marginalized communities but those marginalized communities are also under existential threat because of social media.

Basically. Billionaires, especially those backed by the USA, just can't be challenged. Like adults aren't tremendously mind warped by corpo social media in the same ways kids are. This isn't them trying to tackle the social media problem this is them trying to tackle the polling numbers. What annoys me is that kids are treated as lesser beings in which its ok to unilaterally strip them of agency without consultation as if they're incapable of thought.

I worry the main issue is people are thinking of these social media companies like Twitter, Reddit, Facebook etc and misunderstanding their monopoly as the only way social media can ever exist. And so it's on those companies to moderate better or whatever. Nah you need to disrupt the monopolies and take control away from them in the first place.

The first step is to tackle vendor lock-in. Holding people hostage to remain in contact with their friends/family should be illegal. Enforce interoperability. There's standards there in the same way the EU forced USB-C. Healthier competition can then take hold instead of being kept to the fringes allowing people to migrate instead of being tied to toxic algorithms. Pour in lots of money for research into algorithms and moderation and create "social health health standards" you can then use to ban or fine anything that is "unhealthy" nationwide.

Social media is responsible for coordinated attacks on marginalized groups. This isn't a authoritarian move, censorship or clear cut issue, far from it.

Feels like either marginalized communities formed online weather the storm while social media further radicalizes the world towards the whim of the elite or burn it down and try to find new ways to form communities online not controlled by the ultra rich.

It absolutely is "responsible" for organized attacks because none of these platforms are doing anything to reduce hate speech on their platforms. In fact, they're monetizing it. Youtube is rife with AI generated ads that put world leaders in cuffs, do voice generators spewing hate speech or inflammatory content etc.

Every piece of evidence we have shows that companies designing tailored made addictive social media platforms are *always* going to win against parental discussion with children. I'm sorry but it seems unbelievably naive to think that the incredible harm caused by social media could be stopped by "just having a serious chat about it". It would be like getting someone to stop heroin by giving them a telling off.

These apps are designed by very smart people to be extremely addictive and to feed our worst impulses because that gets clicked. We know they cause massive harm to young people - heck the companies own research shows this.

Ban the whole lot of it. Nuke it into the earth.

Remove the monopoly structure in the first place by tackling vendor lock-in. Allowing people to migrate their social graphs to healthier competitors.

In my view, a "negative" effect to everyone else is they can't access Reddit or other social media? Sounds like a positive to me, it's a cancer to everyone not just teens. No one needs it.

Social media is like a drug, and therefore should be illegal for minors. Simple as that.
