A lot of cruelty and hatred hurled towards fat people tends to be under the veil of "but I'm just concerned about their health". A lot of people rage and rant about how discussion over fatphobia is "normalizing obesity" but all it ever was was just "hey maybe don't treat fat/obese people like they're not even humans".

I was never obese but I was definitely an overweight kid and now a slightly less but still overweight adult (working on it, it took a long time to cut out soda). I was depressed as hell with no friends and food was one of the few things that gave me comfort. Now a few other things give me comfort, lol. It's an unhealthy coping mechanism for all sorts of psychological problems. I used to joke that I wish I got the "forget to eat" depression instead of the "eating like crap" depression.



EDIT: I also don't think you're wrong for wondering this kind of thing. It is something worth addressing. It unfortunately isn't treated very sensitively very often though which kind of triggers old memories of being bullied in school, lol. The thumbnails of these videos bring back some bad memories

This is why it was hard for me to emphathise with people who struggle to gain weight or are underweight. From my perspective it was like a rich person complaining about having too much money. I know now that nobody's problem is "worse" than any other but it's still hard not to wish I had that problem instead of gaining weight being this constant passive worry I always have to have.

It is no accident, therefore, that so-called ‘Gen AI’ is being used to resurrect methods of categorization and image creation that are built on racist ideas. The systems used for facial recognition, for example (not ‘Gen AI’, strictly speaking, but part of the collection of services employing pattern matching) either cannot accurately identify darker faces, or are used to identify those faces as belonging to people who’re categorized as suspect.
