I honestly believe this is the #1 most damaging thing that happens in politics because it justifies the most heinous of things.

I love the framing of this not only being somehow new in our recent lifetimes but also something exclusive to politics.

Biden, like all Presidents, literally did these events all the time about his crap. Nobody cares and the press rarely covers them beyond showing footage during montages because they know they're all staged propaganda with no news. So, while I do like this, and I do absolutely love the idea, the issue is the cost is going to be a huge bump in the road. The last time we tried this it cost a million dollars a bathroom, about two hundred thousand for the pre-fab bathroom itself and then like four times that for installation, which is an absolutely absurd price that made the project basically unviable. The crazy part is that this was touted as "cheap" compared to normal.

Like everyone says, its an absolutely amazing idea, and we desperately need more public bathrooms in the city, but I'm just afraid that the cost is going to limit how effective this can be and unless he can find a way to make it more reasonable we'll get a few in the city and that will be it.

We really gotta find a way to make building shit cheaper in this city.

The costs shouldn't be this insane though. Pretty much every mayor since Bloomberg has been trying to fix this issue and every single time costs ran so far out of control that they installed a handful of toilets, less than half a dozen each, and called it a day. Hell, Adams got these prefab toilets from Portland and the installation cost was 4 times that of the toilets themselves and as a result it was a million a toilet. There's something wrong with the cost of building stuff in this city and it's at the core of a lot of our issues.

Not with all those regulations you want you won't.  

Who cares about how much it costs? Seriously, if this is an idea you truly hold in high regard, the cost wouldn't be one of your first concerns!

Cost is a limiting factor for anything the public sector does, yes. There is a responsiblity not to misuse or waste public funds, yes. However, I'm trying to inspire some introspection into why people (you, but not necessarily you alone) have an reactionary need to immediately switch on their beancounter brain when discussing public measures to fund public welfare projects.

It promotes the idea that public welfare needs to be "worth it". That it needs to assuage the concerns of those who wouldn't even need to utilize these things! You can be a good citizen and trust/verify that public funds are used appropriately, but this need to jump at an annoucement of an objectively just project with concerns of how much it'll cost only serves to enforce this county's brutal heirarchy as well as the overall idea of austerity. It's lame.

I'm rolling my eyes. I've lived in this city my entire life and every damn mayor has tried to fix this exact problem and each and every single time they spend millions of dollars to build like four bathrooms and it never actually gets fixed. So get off your high horse.

I'd like the problem to actually get fixed! I don't give a shit about your ideological crap. The fact you think that matters more than actually fixing the problem says everything I gotta know. Like, dude, you aren't even from here.

Then your problem is with your elected officials failing to do right by the people, not the fact that it costed however much for a poor result.

Also, I don't need to have lived in NYC for X amount of time to sniff out austerity bullshit, it isn't exclusive to any one city. But hey I'm sure this'll be ripped apart in the city council meeting or something with testimony from people who coincidentally share your same concerns about cost. Just like they'll do with minimum wage increases, or affordable housing units, or drug disposal sites, or upzoning.

I will never forget the time I was on the Upper West Side with a friend and had a bathroom emergency and had to use a basement bathroom in a Whole Foods and the only toilet that was available was literally filled almost to overflowing with diarrhea.

I was so sick after leaving the bathroom that I almost bit the manager's head off. You should never be in a position where something like that can happen.

You can literally go on Twitter and look up popular libertarians. To pick a local, Justin Amash is constantly tweeting about how Trump sucks to get replies filled with MAGA abuse calling him a traitor who should be executed. Even Rand Paul, who never called himself a libertarian always a conservative, regularly posts anti-Trump regarding policy stuff he gets attacked for. Literally questioned the Maduro grab last week, look at at the ratio on the tweets, all MAGA raging at him:

All the same old libertarian haunts are still around saying the same stupid shit they've always said. They're 1% of the population and opposed by every political force in existence, you have to seek them out. Instead that thread is all about how they don't actually exist or are all pro-Trump because they never seek any of them out and don't want to hear from them anyway.

Then you get this kind of post:

Haven't been personally exposed to any in forever, but my anecdotal and personal biased opinion is that they are more or less conservatives who embrace "Libertarianism" as some kind of warped idea of ideological cover. But that if you really pry at them, in reality, they are just conservatives (today see: fascists) who don't like to be pinned down/held accountable and want to be able to shed responsibility of a potential labelling.

My guess is that anyone who would have flown under this kind of self-professed banner today is either a full embrace conservative fascist, or has become completely disillusioned with politics altogether. Kind of doubtful that any of these types would have become more of an opposing political ideologue, but I guess it's possible.

It's a thread full of people who think libertarianism was invented by Ron Paul in 2008 and ceased to exist with MAGA rather than being a longstanding fringe position spun out of classical liberalism.

They kind of need me at this point. To watch my mom's blood sugar, to help with groceries and chores, to help pay the bills. People have different circumstances and maybe you should judge them less.

I'm gonna be 40 next month and I live with my parents. I'm also disabled, but that's not really my excuse. My parents have told me that if I moved out their lives would be a lot harder. They kind of need me at this point. To watch my mom's blood sugar, to help with groceries and chores, to help pay the bills. People have different circumstances and maybe you should judge them less.

I've been on disability since 2017. I've done my best to pay every bill on time, and my health was doing well for a while. I made the bad decision to start using credit cards to build my credit score, but it was fine for a while. I paid everything down and there was no concern of interest ever catching up to me. Then came the urgent need for a wisdom tooth removal. Nobody would help me with my medicaid. I called people for hours every single day and the pain was so insane that I couldn't function. I'm pretty sure I was on the verge of death. My wisdom tooth was so bad that it was puncturing the tooth next to it in the process of growing out and damaging the nerves around it. I had to see an oral surgeon which was more expensive by far and I paid out of pocket. I did get some help with the cost, but in the end it cost me $3600+ and so my debt began.

Unfortunately, I had to get more dental work done after that, which cost me over $1500, then I had to take on other costs after that, and it spiraled until I didn't need to spend money anymore. Now I'm $10,000 in debt while surviving on a fixed income accruing interest costs so high that I can't do more than pay the minimum on every card each month while trying to pay my monthly bills. I've tried to get a consolidation loan, but nobody will take me because I don't have any valuable collateral. I also went from a great credit score to a pretty bad one because of all the full credit cards. I get letters from credit card consolidation companies all the time now and when I try to fuck with any of them, they won't fuck with me. It's... brutal. If I didn't have the interest destroying me, I could just pay it all down over the next three years.

I don't really know if there's anything I can do in this situation. I'm just surviving while looking at all the interest devouring my money every month.

What kind of disability are you on? If it’s SSI, you can make up to $1400/ month without losing your benefits. Finding some part time work is the only way I see to pay this down and get out of the hole.

I'd love to be able to do that. Unfortunately my multiple sclerosis doesn't really allow me to have a regular job. My body has a forced need for sleep multiple times during the day and I also am unable to deal with people due to my PTSD. It's more than just that, but that's the basics.

Never gotten off with a partner before. Never managed to penetrate my first love. ED sucks, MS sucks. I've dated several people but I'm still a virgin. I can get myself off every day. I just can't stay.. y'know. :/ Wish I knew what to do. Urologist couldn't help me. Just offers me meds like viagra. I'm sure I could do that, but I honestly don't know if I'd mess with that or not.
