I'd love to understand the mindset of anybody who thinks that they'll be the ones for whom working for Trump actually works out. Especially if you've been selected for one of those key departments where his expectations are simply not aligned with reality, Justice being perhaps the most obvious example.

I've been single my whole life but I can still understand the concern that women might have about dating someone who's not financially independent, along with fears that person might not be emotionally mature enough and rely on their parents to do things for them. But I guess the phenomenon of men treating female partners like mothers instead of equals is not exclusive to those who can't afford to move out.

It's hard. It would be nice to date someone for the first time but there's so many hurdles already aside from this like dating apps being predatory and full of bots that I don't see my chances as being very good anymore, and I'm 30. I can't imagine how it'll be when I get older. As lonely as I am, I'm just trying to survive right now, and I guess that's good enough

Just so the video, interesting and good video expect I'm not quite sure what he's trying to say about the lesbian solider in the Jarhead 2 section. I think his issue is that one of the themes he explores is Jarhead 1 they show examples of how toxic masculinity is used as an indoctrination method that breaks people where in the later sequels it's increasingly sold as an ideal vision of masculinity. She pops up in the later sequels as a target since they talk to her like 'the lesbian' as opposed to one of the bros (how often would her sexuality pop up in convo, or any minorities after awhile if they were cool...if you're known as Black Steve because your black its probably hazing, lol), and then her bonding moment is 'Look at her tits' masculinity to align herself as one of the boys. Sure you can have hyper masculine women be in the army and be seen as one of the boys, but I think his point is that in sequels that forget the original was against hypermasculinity it's kind of cringe. Here's the thing tho, that it in itself is not bad and worthy of investigating because people contain multitudes and perfect PC queer characters can also be a problem because we are not allowing them to be portrayed as people. But we are talking about movies that are basically jingoistic US Marine commercials.

In the case of the awkward bring up her being a lesbian, to be blunt, I'd rather have that then the term constantly being considered taboo in media and never allowed to be said at all, that lesbian rep has to be implied or confirmed outside of the fiction by of a writer/director/producer because we're not marketable enough (or considered bad for marketing), done in a way where you can easily cut us out or not upset men. Sci-Fi because it and Fantasy works REALLY irk me with this, fantasy fiction especially where you can have dragons, magic, Zombies etc... But somehow the term lesbian being said is somehow considered immersion breaking for so many people, fans and creators alike (even progressive media like Arcane pull this); hell the same is true with ANY LGBTQ+ term (I still remember how people got pissy because Dragon Age The Veilguard used the term Non-Binary). I'm sick of that, I'm sick of LGBTQ+ terms being considered off-limits or considered to unnatural to ever be said. Screw that, I want to here the term lesbian more, I want explicit confirmation in the damn fiction their lesbians, the term shouldn't be considered taboo. It's why it's baffling to me it's the cheap jingoistic Army movie that uses the term and of all that films faults, I just can't put it in me to condemn the film for that (which isn't a problem for me) when it has MANY MANY big issues and problems.

Like if what you're saying is what Dan meant, he REALLY should of made that more clear rather then just doing a repeat of the cringe because it comes across as shaming a woman for being "one of the boys" or being raunchy (and like no, their are plenty of fun and raunchy wlw and lesbians out there). Part of toxic masculinity is how it affects women and forces expectations on women. That women have to act a certain way, that we have to like "girly" things despite the fact what is for girls and what is for boys is arbitrary and the result of capitalism, enforcing expectations of women and BS formal rules; from Dolls for Girls and action figures for boys, Pink for girls and Blue for boys, dresses for girls and suits for boys etc; and women who don't conform are shamed or considered "badly written" in fiction if they don't have any femininity (it actually annoys when fiction randomly adds a random feminine trait or hobby to a butch woman just to make her "well-rounded", as if being a woman not interested in traditional girly things can't be well-rounded, exist or is treated as automatically wrong). Women can and should be allowed to be, like and act however they want (obviously that doesn't mean bigots or hateful) and shouldn't be shamed, women should be allowed to make sex jokes or be open about their sexuality.

I think the whole reason he points her out is because she's the only woman in the movie, and the sum total of her character is "is a lesbian who talks about women being hot just like all the other boys". Like that's all they let her be - they let her support misogynistic power structures and use her as an example of "the ideal woman warrior", basically boiling her down to an empty trope.

Like it's very clear the movie is not being thoughtful or progressive about women in the slightest. It's not trying to be meaningful representation, it's using a queer woman as a punchline.

I get that and that's bad and don't expect this movie was progressive, but the way Dan goes around in trying to say that irks me because it acts like her being one of the boys or raunchy is in it's self the issue which it isn't and in a time where so much media acts like say the word lesbian is a taboo, hearing the term at all, even in a terrible work like this feels a bit... Better I guess then usual, like it's nice just hearing the term, like better then nothing, I can't explain it.

I certainly can't tell you how to feel, but at the end of the day, my read is that Dan is simply pointing out all the ways that the sequels completely contradict the original movie's messaging, and having a female character who is only allowed to exist because she feeds the same entrenched toxic-masculinity pillars of the military-industrial complex is just part of that general thing. I don't think he has a problem with the character being a lesbian, he has a problem with her being written as a completely soulless stereotype by men who don't care at all about queer people at best and at worst think every queer person is an immortal horndog with no sexual impulse control.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have brought it up, but he really should have added more detail to his views and clarified it rather then just repeat the cringe meme; especially when so often with these type of films or fiction for decades, women were reduced to nothing as damsels, the love interest or the good wife back home, basically props, from war films to Superhero fiction frigging Wonder Woman had to be the Justice Society's damn secretary back in the 40s comics. The idea of woman allowed to be a warrior in these films or fiction is a newer development and one that really deserves more discussion as it both breaks old toxic and sexist trend while also, as you said also enforces those same toxic trend, hell to this day we still have many men who get pissed off when they see women soldiers or warriors in fiction despite said fiction enforcing much of the status quo they want. This in particular sore point for me who has spent decades pushing for fiction traditionally considered boyish, fighting games is particular to have more badarse (lesbian) women (plus more rep in rosters, body sizes) and to be able to have and not have them to automatically must be hyper sexualized; or wanting any Shonen fiction with lead women protagonist that are allowed to act like Luffy or Goku (and be lesbians) or superheroes. It feels often like no matter what, women, wlw and lesbian women in fiction are told are bad reps no matter what. Sorry I realize that was a bit of tangent.
