I feel that the simplest case that free speech is not some grand protection against tyranny is how America's free speech laws haven't stopped the likes of Fox News, Joe Rogan, Alex Jones and what have you from causing the country's own descent into fascism, but in fact protected them as they did so.

I seriously have never seen this dude not advocate for mass suppression of speech no matter the context.

For me the issue is that a western capitalist society necessitates an underclass. Wealth inequality is always expressed by finding who the minorities are (race, nationality, religious, sexual, gender, etc) and forcing them to become the underclass to bear the weight of exploitation domestically while actively suppressing and exploiting every other country that it can to the extent that they can get away with.

Social sciences like economics have base assumptions that all participants are rational actors and have access to all information. "The market will decide" implies that me as a regular person somehow has decades of experience with stocks/bonds and knows how to 100% maximize my investments and puts that aggregate. In reality, I buy market ETFs and hope for the best.

We do the same for voters. The amount of times I've heard "Well they will just vote him out and if they don't then they agree and it's ok" is infuriating. Or "People just want a change so we get Trump again, too bad". People are complicated and really, really hard to simulate. Also this isn't a direct democracy so no one person is accountable for anything, gerrymandering exists, some people are rightly disillusioned with voting at all; there are all kinds of reasons why it doesn't work.

We have no antibodies for people participating in bad faith and it's killing us as a society. We've been coddled by the idea that a hero will give a big speech and the bad guys will be so embarrassed they will just give up and go home. They do it on Star Trek all the time, just talk to the space nazis about how we're not like that and they'll understand. They'll see that the right way is to cooperate and change their ways. If that were true they wouldn't be nazis, it's not like they are missing some info and we can educate them out of awful beliefs.

I heard a thing way back that said "I like paying taxes, that's how I purchase civilization." and it really stuck with me. Sometimes people need to be forced into doing the right thing and that's not always coercion.

What happens instead is that reliably the GOP gets their base worked up about literally nothing and gets their votes again and again. I'd love to see some kind of "You're not even trying anymore" and "You're actively working against the rules" kind of assessment that throws people out of Congress.

I've been single my whole life but I can still understand the concern that women might have about dating someone who's not financially independent, along with fears that person might not be emotionally mature enough and rely on their parents to do things for them. But I guess the phenomenon of men treating female partners like mothers instead of equals is not exclusive to those who can't afford to move out.

It's hard. Pathways is an interactive game designed for 11- to 18-year-old pupils and funded by Prevent, a Home Office programme for tackling extremism.
