I remember watching an interview with a mental healthcare professional who had been working with kids that were struggling with gender dysphoria and he said they were finding that mostly the kids have internalized homophobia. autism and being online too much seems to push that into "I must be trans!"

I think it's also a matter of the more effeminate boys/men, gay and bisexual also. mix it with some autism and they'll go the easy route of being trans over facing what's really going on. being effeminate, gay or bisexual as a man doesn't get you instant affirmation and have people reluctant to call you out on having degenerate behavior. being trans does. suddenly all your weird autistic and effeminate behaviors are entirely acceptable.

Simple probability meets rapidly rising population trend.

For example, assume just for the ease of calculation that 1% of the mentally ill are going to do a shooting and 1% of trans people are this level of mentally ill, that's a probability of .01% for the entire trans population. So if the trans population jumps like this you get a corresponding jump in shootings:
1. 10,000 -> 1 shooting
2. 100,000 -> 10 shootings
3. 1 million -> 100 shootings
4. 100 million -> 10,000 shootings (of the original 10,000 people?)

The population was simply too small before now to have enough potential shooters, especially because the actual probability is far far lower than in my example. It'd be like if you looked at the number of fatal car accidents in, say, 1900 and every tenth year after. There wouldn't be comparatively any in 1900 and even 1910. But over 1915-1920 each year would add more cars to the road than in every year before 1915 combined.

This is also why the perceived out-of-control-trend of shootings increasing is deceptive: there's more Americans than ever. (With greater mobility than ever.)
