The thing is that I have made almost this exact post again and again and again, across multiple threads over the years. Recently, it feels like I make it at least once a month. People actively know they can't be doing it. If I can be frank, I'm tired of telling everyone what they already know. This has been site policy since day 0 and it was site policy back on the old place too. This is not a new thing, people just seem to think that if things get bad enough then the rules stop applying for some reason or if they can use ideology to justify it then it's fine. People need to realize that there is a huge gap between "I get why someone would do it, but you can't be doing political violence" and "We need to do political violence and here is an excerpt from an essay about why it is essential that you should read while I point to other potential targets." People have literally tried to argue that we should change the rule because they seem to think this is some ideological thing despite the fact I keep telling people it isn't, despite explaining, on multiple occasions, that I get emails about this shit and it puts us all at risk.

I knew an autistic kid in high school (well, knew OF him, saw him around)

he was notorious for using the school computers to look up pictures of cartoon characters coiled up by snakes

typically this would be disney princesses like belle or cinderella coiled up and hypnotized by kaa from the jungle book, and sometimes he would print them out

none of it was overtly sexual so they couldn't (or didn't usually) tell him to stop

but it was absolutely sexual to him

I don't know if I had a point to this story

I guess it's like, what do you do with these weirdos

For its gameplay, though? That depends.

On what exactly? Your personal taste and tolerance for gimmicks. Not the kind of gimmicks that previous Mario games have traded in; power-ups, special moves and whatnot, but rather Super Mario World's primary export: secrets.

Why two questions? So I can give an answer before asking another.

What makes these gimmicks versus core components?

Almost every level and world in SMW has at least one secret entrance into and out of it.

Has an "entrance" out of it? And do any of the stages actually have a secret "entrances" into them? I think there's exactly one Boo House you can do this with.

Sometimes these are detours, sometimes not. You see, the world design in SMW isn't so much A-to-B, but can on occasion be A-to-A.2-to-A.3-to-A.4-to-A.1-and-then-back-to-A-and-then-B. It's a whirlwind vacation at times, is what I'm saying. You do always get to where you're going, it just might take you a bit of a round trip sometimes.

One could read this in two entirely different ways, that it is, as you suggest here is quintessential in its qualities of being a launch title or that it's quintessential historically as a launch title that has other more eternal qualities or as you put it is "actually fun to play today." Altered Beast could be called a quintessential launch title for one of these uses but probably not for the other. Something later like Ridge Racer V or Kameo could be similar. Super Mario Bros. would be one that like World would fit in both categories. And it's only by referring us back to your opening sentence with your supposed conclusion that it leaves us to ponder this rather than the throwaway sentence that the original actually most likely was and probably most readers read it as.

Revise and resubmit.

A large part of my job is editing the work of people who are technically minded and don't really know how to write. This is worse than anything I've read from them. To write like this and call yourself a "journalist" is insulting to...basically everyone.

It's funny because I've previously criticized oty for falsely saying that Marx had a "transition stage of socialism" in his theory, which he didn't, that was introduced by, essentially, Stalin.
