This might be controversial, but I think the AIDS crisis helped them in many ways because it tempered the weird sex cult vibe and gay cinema orgy reputation they had going on in the 70s.

I think the big difference is that a lot of Gay people that indulged to the sex craze were functional adults, while the most outspoken trans people online clearly aren’t.
