There is a lot to be argued about but by the law in Texas, this was murder. Manslaughter would be if he killed him drunk driving, or shoved him back and he hit his head (that would actually be a valid self-defense situation even).

But Karmelo had a choice to leave and chose to stab the other dude. And he did so in the chest. And he obviously thought about it beforehand given his warning. Just because you warn someone, doesn't mean it's okay to murder them in this situation.

Its seriously, seriously fucked up that if a white perpetrator did this to a black victim in the same scenario in Texas (Or anywhere in the country to be fair) you know they'd get away scot free. It’s infuriating and tragic that the country is so racist and sucks even more the real, deep wide consequences this racism has on POC and their families and victims of horrendous racist crimes and all the rest. The white guys should be charged for their murders too. But the law doesn't apply when you have certain privileges.

I like how he halfway changes the tune to “because the whites”. Again, is not like I don’t believe your justice system favors one group over another… but is risible the examples used on this specific case. Kurage talks like we are still in the Jim Crow’s years and some vague and nebulous group of “whites” are getting away with it.

Still, it's always nice to see the community come together in support of a young man in need. Imagine they showed this much interest in him before the brutal, unprovoked and completely avoidable armed murder at a non-contact sporting event.

When imagining a scenario that's exactly the same just with races reversed I find it hard to imagine a white kid would just walk away from it. But who knows, maybe the system is really as racist as Royalan and Nepenthe say, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
One thing I do know for certain though that if races were reversed and someone tried to make arguments, downplaying how it's not murder or that he "had the intent of self defense" they'd instantly get their account nuked by Royalan and Nepthene and they'd forever serve as an example of how racist the forum is

In the criminal justice system, whites are represented by two separate but equally important groups: the police who apprehend black bodies and the district attorneys who sentence them to life in prison. These are their stories.

For me, the worst part is the murdering.

Having not followed this story at all, the only thing I’m curious about is why the kid wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place.  On its face that seems like a “we don’t like your kind around here” situation.  And not to victim blame, but I’m gonna power through, why was it up to these kids to enforce his removal if he truly wasn’t supposed to be there for some legitimate reason?  Seems like a fuck around and find out situation on both sides mixed in with some garden variety racism to me.

the work never ends. the honeypots will continue until every last molecule of potential chuddery is eradicated.  Hmph

Not that the problems it highlighted within the gaming community and industry at large were new, in fact they're basically ancient at this point, but it just so starkly put into focus how many people just don't give a single shit about these issues.

2's reveal is less than a week old and I'm already losing my mind. The sheer indifference to the problems that the devs themselves are touting as a fucking plus is appalling.

tangeu wrote:You're right, it's not a new problem but these games certainly highlight the ambient temperature of this forum or even gamers in general. It's super frustrating because right now that thread is going and will be an echo chamber of people saying how gross it is because the usual suspects are just avoiding it for now, but when there is a new trailer or preview or review thread bet your ass we'll see the "hype" all over again and the problems will be ignored and will become normalized and the next one will be even worse.

But I thought that's what they wanted??? People are too afraid to say anything positive about the game in fear of getting sniped while everyone else is performatively tut tutting to virtue signal they're an ally. Even if they successfully get Stellar Blade on the banned content list like Hogwarts Legacy, people will just move on to the next game that's deemed problematic and express their interest/excitement and we do the same song and dance. ??? ??? ???

I wonder if they're gonna make excuses for Dead or Alive 7 to avoid this scrutiny because it's a series they grew up with (so it doesn't count as a chud game) whereas Stellar Blade is a new IP designed exclusively for chuds in their mind.

The cowards and frauds in this thread who seek to divide us don't have the stomach to face the reality of what happened. They are cowards just like Anthony's parents who couldn't even stay in the courtroom when the medical examiner laid out the exact nature of Metcalf's wound.

His parents surrounded themselves with racial grifters immediately following the criminal act and Anthony was given an incredibly lenient bail situation which allowed him to graduate from high school and live a pretty good life up until the trial.

If you believe this country is an ongoing project, the chapter which ended at Appomattox Courthouse was written in the blood of many white immigrants who sacrificed their lives to end the great evil of slavery.

This trial was not perfect but I think the racial conversation surrounding it is radicalizing people in the wrong direction.

The shared project only works if everyone can make peace with living in a multicultural society and the trade-offs that come with that. Hard to see things getting better with so much disinformation targeting those who can't separate truth from fiction (this goes for whites, too).

Seeing the IGN thread linked though... Yeah no, their is no ambiguity there, they KNOW what they did making her face like that and using that controversy to sell the game "If you want to know, you have to play to find out!" is just gross. Like the comparisons to Quiet and the "You'll be ashamed of your words and deeds" are apt but at least Quirt didn't look like a kid and wasn't straight up a teen like with Evie here.

Also side note and so many game sites do this but writers, stop writing about these controverses (not just this or objectification of women but most game controversies) like you're trying to sell the game at the same time, like having a paragraph like, "Shift Up announced Stellar Blade: Blood Rain at Summer Game Fest last week with an eye-catching trailer that revealed Evie, a brand new main character who prefers to punch her way through enemies than take the slice and dice approach favored by her predecessor." kind of makes it come across you don't actually give a damn about the controversy you're righting about and feels REALLY gross to do when discussing about people uncomfortable about the objectification of a Teen.

JigglesBunny wrote:The lack of diversity in the jury and the Texas legal system writ large were definitely oriented to make an example out of a young black man convicted of a crime, that's a tale as old as time.

His punishment here is deliberately harsh, and the "controversy" around it is also a classic hit from the American legal system files — people of color are rightfully viewing this is as a case of inflated charges by a prosecution out for blood and racial unrest, which it is, and white republicans have latched onto that response to frame it as evidence that people of color are violent criminals who endorse violence against white people.

It's a mess we've seen hundreds of times, but the only bare and basic truth we can get to is that this was a senseless, horrific tragedy, a young man is dead, and another young man is as good as dead because the justice system is going to toss him in a cell and throw away the key. There's no peace for anyone, no real lessons learned, no opportunities for growth for anyone, it's just blood for blood wearing the mask of justice because he gets to technically live in a prison cell instead of being put down by the state.

The only lessons here for the rest of us are the same lessons we've learned dozens of times already. Don't let anger win and get you caught up in a bad situation, don't throw hands or steel when words or escaping the situation could do, and don't ever expect the American justice system to treat a black man like they would a white man in the same situation, because they will be sure to make you regret it and try to make an example out of you.
Texas charges everyone like this, they've put innocent white men to death.

Every prosecutor in the country overcharges and it's not for blood/racial unrest, it's for spite against not pleading guilty when they offered you lesser charges.

Also, Anthony is going to get out at 35. That's if it his sentence survives appeals.

It's exhausting seeing the violence visited upon Anthony being brushed aside as "just a push" in the wider context of this racist country we live in.

To be clear, that was NOT Metcalf's tent. Being team captain gave him no ownership of property. He did not have the authority to approach Anthony, demand he leave, enter his personal space and physically threaten him if Anthony did not comply with orders he had no power to make. It don't matter how many times Anthony was asked to leave. And it's personally shocking to me that people don't realize how micro-aggressive this is. To easily rest on the idea that a Black boy should have ceded to a white boy's demands because you have been raised to believe that THAT should be the default response. And if he doesn't? Well, of course he gave him a little push...

And mind you, NONE OF THIS is me arguing that Anthony was in the right for doing what he did. He wasn't. But what's upsetting people, and what's micro-aggressive is the refusal to engage with why Black folks would fear for their safety in this situation at all.
And think about this, the tent wasn't even a permanent structure, it was a temporary one on someone else's property!

This is one of the dumbest things ever written. The entire purpose of a jury system is not to remove these emotions, to allow you to plead your case to your peers.

Even despite the history of racism that led to that ruling (which isn't as insane as you make it, it's only when people are deliberately excluded from the jury not just whenever a jury is all one race), the concept that you can only be judged by people of your own skin color is an abhorrent and racist one. You're saying that people of different skin color literally cannot be your peers. Pretty fucking racist!

Why don't we slice it thinner? As someone with headmates, only those with headmates should be allowed to criminally judge me!
