Some of it comes off like genuine psy-op shit, like "adults" are intentionally bad-faith reading the movie to create some narrative about its perceived "values," especially in how it speaks to or represents a current generation of younger people. I think perhaps anything coming from the NYT is not to be taken at face value, especially considering media's need to center lonely men in everything.

I'm actually not kidding, this is the tipping point for me. I'm radicalized actively now. While it was obviously bad and getting worse, the process of starting to literally make it illegal to be too poor shows to me the blatant divide in our system is getting far too great, and I will not be supporting a system that stands for this level of dehumanization. The program emphasizes a nonadversarial approach, integrating health care, education, and rehabilitative services into the criminal justice process, with the intent to reduce recidivism, provide housing assistance, and promote accountability among participants. It also creates the crime of unauthorized camping on public property, establishing penalties and eligibility criteria for participants, while outlining a structured pathway for individuals to receive necessary support for reintegration into society.

The legislation includes provisions for monitoring defendants' progress in the Homelessness Court program, allowing for probation revocation if conditions are violated. yeah I was actually reading the bill and the framing is disingenuous as hell, saying "this is what the bill does" when it's a vague and inaccurate rewording of a small part of the bill

it disallows "public camping" on public property i.e. streets, sidewalks, parks etc. which doesn't take place in registered camping vehicles or on defined campgrounds

it also has a provision that says a political subdivision (town etc.) may designate an area for public camping, if there are not sufficient beds in homeless shelters (hint, hint)
