How in the world do these people believe that warehouses full of server racks are somehow more uniquely and severely environmentally destructive (or just annoying) than the "green" and coal power plants they want built at taxpayer expense? lol

the environmental argument against AI has never worked or made any sense

https://andymasley.com/visuals/water/

because the facts could not sufficiently be twisted to make its aggregate impact appear as disastrous as desired, the conversation has had to twist to local concerns, i.e. "this poor little old lady has brown tap water due to the construction of a data center nearby her house," which then if you dive into the details is being caused by the construction itself and not due to the demands of an active and operational datacenter

and the copyright argument against AI has never worked either

models don't literally store the works they've trained on, a fact which is obvious on its face and is more-or-less requiring judges to find in its favor

people try to say shit like "but...it had to examine 100% of the work in order to learn the non-infringing information that ends up in the model, which means fair use factor 3 weighs against it!"

including apparently the actual USCO, in a highly irresponsible, fundamentally flawed report that remains in pre-publication a year later:

https://www.copyright.gov/ai/Copyright-and-Artificial-Intelligence-Part-3-Generative-AI-Training-Report-Pre-Publication-Version.pdf#page=59

Quote:Downloading works, curating them into a training dataset, and training on that dataset generally involve using all or substantially all of those works. Such wholesale taking ordinarily weighs against fair use.

And their citation for this brief and definitive statement comes from fucking Karla Ortiz in her almost-completely-thrown-out-of-court lawsuit, who could not have known whether what she was saying was even true or not:

Quote:Karla Ortiz Initial Comments (“I found that almost the entire body of my work, the work of almost every artist I know, and the work of hundreds of thousands of other artists, was taken without our consent, credit or compensation to train these for-profit technologies.”)

the argument doesn't work in the least, since we all know that Wikipedia articles about things like movies are fair use, but they require watching 100% of the movie in order to write the plot summary, so does that mean "100% of the movie was used?" or was fucking none of it used, because it's not literally contained in the article?

copyright doesn't work on fruit of the poisonous tree, you can see a painting, be inspired by it, and make a new painting that doesn't use anything from that first painting, and it doesn't matter that you "absorbed 100% of the first painting" to contribute to the making of the second, all that matters is the content itself

it's all a fucking shitshow of misinformation

The right mald constantly and absolutely pearl-clutch, just over different shit. We focus on REE here so it feels more one-sided for lefties, but your average conservative evangelical is just as fucking brain-rotted and thin-skinned as your average Discord tankie, just in a slightly different way.

Anyone who voted for Trump 3 times shouldn't procreate, tbh. Luckily we don't need to worry about Hasan fans having babies because most of them don't leave their basements and women actively avoid them.

Accepted. Fact of the matter is, extremist cunts are shit fuck arseholes regardless of the "side" they're on.

A new entry in Planetsmasher's Big Book Of Things That Definitely Happened

Quote:When I was a teenager I got dragged to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a school trip to see some kind of opera, and they set me up in the front row of the top balcony, which was EXTREMELY close to the edge. At some point during the show I blacked out for a few seconds, and when I woke up I was leaning forward with the top part of my body dangling over the guardrail. I was extremely lucky I woke up when I did, because I don't think it would've taken much effort to send me sailing over that edge into the audience below me.

All that is to say that this has been a fear living in my brain ever since that day. I don't know what specific circumstances led that dude to fall off the balcony himself but it's something that's lived with me for a while. I get that upper-level balconies can't have super high guardrails in order to ensure the people sitting in them can actually SEE the stage, but I wish there was a more elegant (and safe) solution.

Pretty sure it’s shiba5.  If you go to https://www.resetera.com/threads/active-staff-roster.7164/#post-1191462 you can click on all the other names and it pops up their little user card or whatever, but shiba5 does nothing which makes me think the account was nuked for some reason.  I know I saw the name recently too so definitely still active.

Edit: Yea shiba5’s account has been nuked, if you try to go back to a post that another user quoted it just says post not found. Now I’m more curious about what happened that it necessitated a full account nuke to hide.

The "proof" is a single troll account with one post to its name here.

I know we're not supposed to post count shame but writing the report made me feel like Mac going Pepe Silvia so I gave up. But after seeing the incel twitter crap pointed out I have to draw attention to the post that followed that one, also with a single digit post count over the course of a year that engaged the troll account with arguments that would not look out of place in the circles that produced the image above.

Someone is trying to craft a narrative offsite and so far no regular posters have taken the bait but it may be worth being mindful about it.

There's a whole Xitter chain going on and people are putting ERA's members usernames with their posts bashing the series in full display, saw at least one guy saying that they (ERA users) should be doxxed.

Doesn't help that the CEO of the game is retweeting fan-art of the new protagonist slapping her own ass and saying shit like "does this look like the body of a kid? I'm an adult!!".

Whole situation is gross as shit.

Is a thread backfire because is entremet being clueless again:

entremet wrote: I didn't even know this was a Sony game.

I thought it was some generic game. Looking at sales charts, seems like it's struggling sadly. What went wrong with the marketing here?

I don't know how I missed this one. And I"m pretty tapped in--hello I post here.

I do appreciate the boldness of a new IP, but I think making this a sequel to Returnal may have been a wiser move.

Or he is lying his ass off or his algorithm made him hallucinate.
