I do think if you want to send a message, it starts right now, today. By the time the PS6 comes out or they stop producing discs, no message is going to matter.

That means stop sharing or discussing marketing materials, stop buying games, stop paying for your PS+, etc. Yes, this means games that are still being printed on discs, yes, this means games you really want to play.

Sounds like a quick and easy way to get a bunch of devs fired, which, as we know, is the worst possible thing a video game developer can do.

Preface - Game preservation is more important than anything else relating to games to me. I moved from growing up on computer gaming, to live through the 90s where compatibility was constantly killing games due to system updates, hardware updates, etc. to console, where games just worked as long as you kept checkpoint hardware (PS1/N64, PS2/Xbox/GC).

With the rise of online-check computer DRM, I never looked back at computer, despite flirting with the idea for years. On console, you could buy AAA games day 1 without DRM, and as always, as long as you kept the hardware, you could play it.

Now, with PlayStation and Xbox going all-DRM-all-the-time, and Nintendo looking to remove safeguards for preservation with Game Key Cards, I look back at PC and see...

Valve - "Nazis are a feature not a bug"
GOG - "Nazis, check out how hip with are!"
EGS - "Don't hurt Nazis feelings, they are people too!"


So like, Itch, I guess? That's not enough to sustain my lifelong passion for video games, one that began in the 80s on black and white monitors, and has continued to this day, on both the playing side and the dev side. This is really the last straw for me - If we don't value our art, what is even the point anymore?

Lately, I've been spending more time with my wife watching shows together, reading a lot, and got heavily into board games. While I would not have ever called these as my replacement for games, I guess I have enough existing games to last me until the sun explodes... But getting lost in the excitement for new stuff is just going to be sad. Just another thing I love ruined by AI raising the cost of hardware.

So yeah, what other things have you been looking on getting into? I need some suggestions, since I feel a pit in my stomach right now, and losing something that's been a part of my life since before I could walk.

I was talking about how much the underplaying has directly or indirectly caused the negativity to fester and spread far and wide, because nothing was ever done about it except ignore it. The other user I replied to, who had a better perspective about it over me, managed to tie it back into the movie underperforming, because being met with constant negativity just makes some underserved part of the audience base to just not show up anymore. You guys should view this flop through the lens of the general audience, or — people who don't discuss the financial performance of comic book films on internet forums.

Chuds didn't ruin this film, and you're legitimizing a fringe community. General audiences don't use the internet like us, and nor do they feel especially invested in superheroes in general. They're unlikely to stumble across chud content because of these two factors.

Supergirl flopped because the superhero genre has been cooling down post-COVID, and is no longer part of the zeitgeist. GAs consumed these films for social reasons, and were never actually fans. These films were social lubricant, much like Fortnite and Call of Duty are for the average person. The main utility of superhero films was connecting with others and fitting in, while the films themselves were secondary. Superhero films lost their social utility, and now GAs no longer care for them.

The majority of people are not saying that the chuds are the main reason for the film's failure. But they are a big reason for the discourse surrounding the film being as toxic as it is, however.

And you really gotta stop calling them "fringe." They are not. It is very, very easy to find and fall into those traps on social media and YouTube.
