Agreed, but we also need to police the commits to make sure they aren't generating the code and then rewriting it to claim they're doing it themselves or anything similar. Like a bunch of essential work "suddenly" reappears after we remove the tainted code. This is exactly why we need to be hardline zero-tolerance on AI, there's an existential threat of its cultists secretly sabotaging work by introducing unclean code destroying the entire project. These decompilation projects desperately need a Rectification Movement and really should be the first step of any future ones.

This thread is in many ways inspired by [USER=9388]entremet[/USER]'s "DLC won. The rise of V-Bucks and other in-game currencies has been depressing to me." thread. I was going to reply in that thread but I ended up writing a 2000 word post that I realized no one was going to read and would more likely just annoy everyone in that thread so I didn't, but it did cause me to think about a lot of stuff.

I've love fighting games since I was a kid. My first fighting game was Soul Edge (well Soul Blade as it was called here in the UK at the time, speaking of, why has this game never re-released, that makes me sad) and have loved them ever since.

One fighting game that really mattered to me was Tekken Tag Tournament 2, it came out just at the right time for me when I was suffering from a lot of stress and issues in my life and ended up becoming like a stress reliever like how many people treat cozy games today. What I loved about fighting games is that I felt like I was in control if that makes sense, like even if I lost to the final boss, it was MY loss and my incentive to push on to beat them, I was in control. There was no deadlines, I could play whenever I wanted, I could play online or offline whenever I wanted and not be disappointing say a team. The genre became my favourite type of video game in many ways because it was like a power fantasy where I could play as a woman and kickarse without that whole "oh no! We can't hit a "weak" woman!", no everyone was treated equally (in terms of skill anyway, costumes and objectification is another story). They were stress relievers and just the ultimate fun.

I also find that their also games where you can make your own fun. I'm one of those weirdos who spent days making custom fighters in Soul Calibur 4, 5 and 6's create a figther like making 52 DC heroes and villains and then creating my own encounters and fights like I made my own DC Fantasy Fighter (a concept I'm surprised I've never seen online, especially given the popularity of stuff like Ninja Batman). Or got addicted to making custom maps or Tag 2's Team fighter and making the continuing adventures of Super Sentai Tekken Force. I'm the weirdo who'd go down massive lore rabbit holes. I want deeper and more thought provoking plots. I want fighting games with more social sim and dating sim elements; I'd love a create-an-arcade mode etc to make your own stories.

I don't hate the concept of DLC, I think DLC can be very good and fun and will admit one of the type of DLC I like the most are ones that add more meaty character and story to DLC character who always feel they often get the shaft.

So where am I going with this? Well... Quite frankly I've been losing my love for fighting games... Or more accurately I'm losing my love of PLAYING fighting games. While I had Marvel Tokon at launch, I didn't get to play it until a few days ago because of family health issues. This was a game I've been excited for over a year, in fact it's been my most hyped game of the year... And it just hasn't clicked for days now, no matter what, I just can't make myself connect. Like I LIKE the game, it's fun, but something just wasn't right and after 4 days I've kind of just stopped.

A similar thing happened just earlier with Season 4 of Street Fighter 6... It just didn't connect, though in that case a lot of that was the deflating I had with the announcement of the end of World Tour and it's replacement being well... Not really good, repetitive, grindy and so lacking in comparison (and oddly way to easy at the same time) and Tekken 8 before that; I didn't even bother getting Mortal Kombat 12 until it was free on PSN and even then I've barely played it.

And I think the main culprit has been every fighter slowly becoming a live service forever game and slowly moving away from what made me like about fighters. Every fighter now seems to need "seasons", Battle Passes, constantly pushing you into ranked, daily rewards, constant DLC, more and more of which is becoming limited time DLC etc etc. With Tekken 8, what killed the game for me was that the Battle Passes were limited time to buy (I will never fucking get his), had a deadline and only wins on Ranked counted towards it (don't know if they've changed this). I hate Battle Passes to begin with, I played ranked less and less (in part to be honest I always find myself quickly bored with ranked, seeing the same fighter over and over and over again gets quickly dull) so like fuck that; but also because content for modes I liked such as character customization were tied to it; so in order to get that stuff, I would have had to turn Tekken 8 into a game I played to have fun into a game that I need to work on, like I'm a middle of the road in terms of skill, my highest ranks on online Tekken usually stop around Garyu and I just didn't want to turn Tekken into work.

The first fighter I really felt this was Mortal Kombat 11 which tied some DLC costume like Classic skins to weekly events on the Towers of Time and only to the like the percentage of players so I would grind my ass off to do it, like I was the highest 0.4% of players for the classic skin for Jade if I recall once... And it burned me out, I started to hate my experience with it.

Same thing with Marvel Tokon, I'm dreading when they'll announce the battle passes for that because it'll be limited time (again, though some users here have told me that ArkSys does release stuff like costumes as non-BP DLC a year afterwards, really need confirmation with that for Tokon), it will Tokon into work, it will be ranked only (or Ranked and Casual if I'm lucky, their will be a ton of useless bullshit to make the Battle Pass longer and grindier to push "boosters" (have to push that addiction) etc etc etc, just like every other fucking live service game and slowly every damn fighting game.

I feel like I'm in small a minority that DON'T want fighters to turn into this, I see people (Side note: I'm well aware a lot of the fighting game users of this site don't like me or get annoyed when a complain about the online FGC, this thread wasn't made to be another one of those and I'm sorry for the frustration I've caused over the years) online declare ALL fighters should be free to play and stuff to the gills with this stuff and like no, no I don't want this. I see people demanding Street Fighter 6 should have more meaningful content tied to battle passes, more content to be vaulted away and inaccessible to anyone who bought the game "late", took breaks or had other commitments. I think the only reason I lasted so long with Street Fighter 6 was that it's Battle Passes were very lenient despite only being a month long, account everything you did including single player etc so it could be done easily over a weekend; and the World Tour stuff made me want to keep coming back because I WANTED TO COME BACK, not because I felt obligated to because of FOMO (side note: I wish their were multiple save slots for that so I can replay it).

I never wanted my fighters to become jobs, I never wanted the genre to become one where I always felt the need to keeping playing of lose out on fun costumes, I never wanted to feel forced to play ranked every month. I'd dreading the next Smash Bros will become a forever live service and I think that would gut me so much.

And that's a feeling I've been having more and more outside of fighters. Pokémon, my single all time favourite video game franchises has been slowly bumming me out with it's online modes and locking pokemon or items like Megastones into those modes to force you to play or miss out. Like Pokopia, a game I've been playing daily pulls the limited time Pokemon and items shit despite being a fun cozy game; and I only tolerate that because the game is very exploitable (simply altering your Switch 2's clock means you can play and get the event stuff anytime you want (and actually see new dialogue not available the first time round)). I'm dreading the day Mainline Pokémon games become full live service forever games; it feels like it's just a matter of time.

More and more, single player games are pushing this live service stuff and I hate it. It's one of the major reasons why I spend less on games and moving more and more away from AAA games and play more indies and retro games (the most fun I've had with a fighter in the past two years was with Street Fighter Alpha 3 (the best Street Fighter, [COLOR=rgb(255, 0, 0)]FIGHT ME!!!! [/COLOR])) Upper on the second Capcom collection, reminded me so much of why I loved fighters). There are still a few AAA games I'm looking forward to like Fortune's Weave and Wolverine but their coming less and less.

I think what doesn't help is as I've gotten older, I've had less time for games, from looking after family, work and just wanting to do other stuff like write, forest walks, publicly transition and be more active in advocacy etc etc. Games are wanting more time out of me that I just don't have.

And I also think I've grown tired of most video game discourse which doesn't help. I'm done to death seeing video game fans overreact to review scores, the Us vs Them nature of discussions where anyone who loves the game is X and must agree or be Y and those who "hate" something (or just mild criticism, or like the game with some issues) are A any must agree and support with B, the weird platforming of chuds and grifter under the veil of "critiquing" their nonsense, thus giving the nonsense a wider audience, more attention and gives the nonsense and lies more credibility then the have (which is nothing). I'm sick of platform warring, Sales and Metacritic scores used as the only indicators of a game being a success of good, the constant overhype etc etc (note this is about ALL discourse, not just ERA so please don't use this thread to attack other users or "classic ERA!" posts). I don't hate it all (I'm post this on a gaming forum), shout out to [USER=2163]Jaded Alyx[/USER], [USER=16459]Astral[/USER] [USER=8856]ImaPlayThis[/USER] and [USER=80]Neoxon[/USER] for being the best fighting game users on the site and on the off chance you're reading this, hoping you're having a wonderful life JusDolt; I love going to the Why Women Criticize thread. But I just don't have the energy anymore to engage with so much of it, it feels so pointless when what I want to discuss is goofy what if stuff and revieing the entire First Gen of Digimon.

Side note: I didn't think this fit with the OP but I would like to say it. I really hope fighting game don't cannibalize themselves or end up hurting the genre by pushing more and more with these Live Service Forever games. After all if you make all fighters forever games, what is the incentive to buy another one if you're too busy playing and being expected to support another in ways that weren't treated like obligations before and didn't risk you losing in years past? I feel like it will just create a market where newer fighters are going to struggle to find audiences already supporting fighters already asking for all of their attention.

Fighters also already have an issue of already being expensive games and many people I know already just wait on Fighters because so often it's cheaper to wait for the Special/GOTY edition and from what I've seen, the move to live service has made them less appealing.

We live in a society. For the privilege of living in a society, we must pay taxes. This is not negotiable it has to happen because a society requires there to be SOME public institutions. The courts for one, without courts there is no law, thus there is no society.

Ok, so, imagine this. We add another service that provides a public good, it needs to be funded to operate, but we will collect the money via taxes. Because the financial burden is carried by the entirety of society and money is collected on a calendar basis, we call it "free", you don't have to pay to make use of the service in the same way if it was organised via the private market.

And even go so far as to interfere, use sanctions and their military strength to ensure these nations have no hope of actually breaking out of poverty. It is paramount the people do not start asking questions.

Ironic, isn't it? The west loves to talk about the Chinese Communist Party censoring the people and using propaganda to avoid the Han majority ask too many questions. Yet we are all subject to the same disinformation campaign just going in a different direction.

This is also why the right love to platform and fund conspiracy theories. Because if the people are going to ask questions, it should be about things that won't ever effect the status quo like "why are so many Jews in the media". "are lizard people secretly controlling the democrats", "is Michelle Obama a man?" But don't EVER ask questions about Israel.
