I will preface this by saying i'm not defending this abhorrent person nor the horrifically terrible acts he committed. He was a monster, regardless of mental health issues. murdering people is ALWAYS a monstrous act regardless of someones mental state.

I will say though, and this is not me trying to tone police around a sensitive subject, but as someone who is severely mentally ill and has been suicidal many many times, whenever someone calls suicide a "cowardly" act it really triggers me in a bad way. this person was not a coward because he took his own life to escape something, he was a coward for not owning up to the monstrous and heinous acts he committed because, despite what may be wrong in our heads, it's never okay to harm someone let alone kill them. we have a responsibility to not commit terrible crimes, even when our own brain becomes our worst enemy.

I'll be honest i'm not in a good place right now so i'm not sure how well this post contributes to this thread or how well it conveys my thoughts, but i needed to get something about this off my chest so here it is.

How is it not cowardly? You're literally running away and shifting your trauma onto everyone else. While making it permanently unresolvable.

I don't begrudge someone who chooses to self-unalive, people should have the right to self-ownership, but glorifying it and trying to make it moral is horseshit. Do it or don't do it because you want to, stop trying to make everything some kind of crusade to impose on everyone else.

I know he owns many guns which is a massive red flag from the get go, as an American trans woman getting shot is one of our highest causes of death outside of suicide. So i scrutinize gun owners more than maybe a cishet person would. How do you accidentally follow Shapiro AND daily wire for years tho? combine that with being not just a gun owner, but outright a gun enthusiast just by how many he owns, and that makes me put two and two together. now i admit i haven't seen him say anything sus directly, but the smoke is there.

Also this isn't about "hate", people hate me for being a transgender lesbian, i don't hate this person or anyone truly. i just think based off the evidence he is to be avoided. Also before anyone asks, no i don't trust gun owners or gun enthusiasts. if this makes me a bad person than so be it. they just scare me.

I'm stripping some of the identifying information because unlike most ResetERA.com members he's actually tried to compartmentalize his online accounts from his professional accounts (as Hecht does), any idiot can still find this guy the way I did from a single one of his ResetERA.com posts.

I am a computational systems biologist, and a senior Bioengineering: Data Science PhD doctoral candidate at [university] and the [university tax shelter]. I launched my career with four years of R&D, engineering, and project management experience at global food and beverage giant, PepsiCo. Innovating on giant brands like Lay's potato chips, I sharpened my knowledge in bioprocess development, simulation, data analytics, and consumer products manufacturing. As a co-advised PhD student in the [university labs every student is part of], I strive to build myself as a leader within data science and the computational, systems, and synthetic bioengineering community by studying microbial systems ecology and big data analyses to study the gut-brain-axis and gut-kidney-axis, and the relationships between chronic disease and the human gut microbiome. The show that caused my career to take off the way it did was a show I did with Matthew. This was maybe 8/9 years ago. It was a play he wrote and starred in that had premiered on the West End and then moved... Off-Broadway.

In my 15 year career as a stage manager for theater, this was probably the worst play I've ever worked on. It was a truly trite and awful piece of shit that was clearly something he thought was "auto-biographical." It was a play about an alcoholic who fell in love with a high-end escort. The entire premise of the show was to equate alcoholism - a tragic disease that Matthew suffered from- with being a sex-worker who had a thriving career, social life, and love life. He wrote the thing like an episode of Friends, and the play ended with the escort agreeing to give up her lucrative career for his character, but never addressed whether his character gave up being a "functioning" alcoholic. No matter how often the cast and creative team had sit down conversations about how the play was problematic, he refused to listen.

He was a very charming guy. I felt for him, and tried to make his life on the show as comfortable and easy as possible. I took extra pains explaining to my team and the props folks the urgency of absolutely scrubbing all of the prop beer bottles out entirely, knowing that even the smell can trigger an alcoholic. One time in rehearsal I handed him a freshly washed out prop beer bottle and he asked me "Is this clean? If it even smells like booze, you won't see me for a week, and when you do, it'll be because I set this studio on fire."

At that time I was a smoker, and so was he. Because of his star power, the rehearsal studio agreed to let him smoke in one of the stairwells knowing he couldn't just go out and smoke on the NYC streets in the middle of Times Square. He insisted I should be allowed to smoke with him, too. I think he wanted company. One time, during a matinee performance, he went outside to smoke in the alley. The alley had two doors, one, the stage door at the end of the alley, the other, just before that, a door leading to the very front of house. After his smoke, he confidently threw open the house door during the only dramatic scene in the show. I made a sign that just said "NO MATTHEW" and slapped it on that door after that.

I could tell it was the one of the few times someone had called him out and shut him down.

Unironically I really enjoy the movie 17 Again. He’s not in it much. Zac Efron plays the younger him, when some magic shit turns back into a teen. The movie is a stream of problematic scenarios happening when a middle age guy returns to being a teenager. Him as a teen macking on his adult wife. His daughter making moves on him. His daughter’s friends all trying to get with him. Him becoming his teenage son’s friend to get him popular and laid. All while trying to ruin his daughter’s relationship to keep her pure. There’s also his adult best friend, a millionaire, who keeps trying to get with the principal. He won’t take no for an answer. He bribes her by buying school supplies. In the end, it works out because she’s into Star Trek.
