I've said it a few times before: this site is a boys' club and always will be, because the management and moderation team has clearly decided to prioritize a big tent approach to discussion topics and users and only shuts down the most egregious stuff. That makes it better than about 99% of other online forums, but it's still far from a safe space and sketchy behaviour is still allowed if it's done under a guise of plausible deniability.

The only solution is to find and/or make your own dedicated communities for women, femmes and nonbinary folks. You aren't going to find what you want here or anywhere else. It's been a nearly decade, nothing is changing. What we have is by design.

I think what frustrates me so much about all the discussion of DLSS5 is the waste of it all. A use of tech so bad for the environment and has already done so much damage to people, from toxic data centers, revenge porn, propaganda, scamming, wrecking education, has gotten so many people laid off etc etc etc and for what? So a video game can look "better" for some well off gamer bros? So Women in games can be made to fit beauty standards, oh wow so worth it.

Not going to lie, the past few days have been pissing me off so much, it feels like people just don't care about the long term damage and more upset at people against GenAI now then they are about how GenAI ills, that they are happy artists getting laid off and fired because they can get their games out sooner (to hell with the art itself, god Concept artists have been done so dirty), that the environment can go fuck itself because they can make a woman in a game prettier despite already being pretty.

I hope we are because yes it's an issue. It's hard not to notice that DLSS5 tries to touch up women regardless of who they are to fit beauty standards, often seemingly trying to give them the same face. While the result are inept, the results show a disturbing future and one of the many reasons for why GenAI can't be allowed to be the future.

While I can agree with folks that America (really, the West) is barbaric, it's a completely toothless observation without a recognition of the dialectical relationships and historical precedents that have led to this point where we are with gun ownership, many of which will continue to be unaddressed by the country at large. Like if you can't even acknowledge the racial dynamics involved, your judgement means nothing.

Gun control will come when we remake society such that there aren't multiple industries (weapons manufacturing/MIC, journalism, social media, etc.) and status quos contingent upon the exacerbation of reasons people feel the need to be personally armed in the first place.

if I remember right, by 2030 it's estimated that data centers will be 1.5 to 3% of all human electricity use globally, and because it's a particularly clean industry, about 1% of all human emissions globally

which is not nothing, but this is all data centers everywhere for every purpose: netflix, hulu, amazon, discord, forums, banking, commerce, streaming, AI, scientific research, etc

something that we all rely on every day amounting to 1% seems eminently fair

imagine a dystopian city choked with smog, a cyberpunk hellscape where it's hard to even breathe

now imagine you shut down every data center, removing 1% of the smog from the air and basically disabling the internet for everyone

we don't have internet fast enough to send a request to a remote data center for a modified frame and get it back fast enough to display and not have the game be an unplayable mess

These are some of the most sensitive, dramatic people imaginable. Honestly, they could have their own private group chat/discord with like 12 fucking people, but even that would turn into a toxic, backbiting shithole. And they'd never admit this, but they enjoy having an audience more than actually forming or maintaining a tight-knit community. 

Never mind that the mod team has run off numerous fandoms and subcommunities to appease these fucking weridos. 

This entire thing is about being performative for their fellow inmates, not having a safe place to discuss video games or other topics.

First of all, this is not really me saying I'm in danger. I'm not contemplating hurting myself, nor am I in danger of taking my own life. But I'm currently going through a dark period in my life and I don't know if I see a way out of it, and...I don't know. I could use some outside perspective in looking at it. Also, fair warning that I share some personal stuff regarding past sexual abuse.



I'm 41 years old, autistic, and disabled. Almost a year ago, I received surgery on my back that, due to a combination of diabetes making healing slow, arthritis in both of my legs leaving both of my knees bone on bone, and severe depression, have left me unable to regain the ability to walk. I am currently scheduled for a joint replacement consultation for one of my knees that could, hypothetically, get me back into rehab and on the path to walking again, but that's not all I'm currently dealing with.



I am also living in a nursing home. Prior to my surgery, due to various circumstances, I lost housing at the ISL (Independent Supported Living) I was living at. Furthermore, due to living in a nursing home, my SSI was reduced to 30 dollars a month. My mother and father pay for my personal internet and phone, which puts a great deal of strain on them. I've ultimately managed to enjoy a few things due to the support of some friends, but that has had to come to an end. In general, I've had to face the facts that I'm also very bad with money, and am also a person who struggles with buying things too much because it allows her to feel some measure of control over her anxiety and poor life situation.



That's not the end of my problems. The housing company I lived at the ISL with ultimately had numerous problems with me, and submitted to my state's court to have me evaluated to be placed under a guardianship. The circumstances as to why are frankly too embarrassing and demoralizing to get into, and they ultimately do not make me feel good about myself. In my state (which I do not want to divulge in order to not dox myself), guardianships are wielded against people who have learning disabilities like a cudgel, disproportionately and oftentimes excessively. My plan is to try and get this down to supported decision making, but to do that I need to actually coordinate with my court appointed lawyer, with whom I am still having difficulty getting in contact.



Through it all, I can't help but shake the feeling I deserve this. When I was a teen, I was groomed on-line by a respected older friend and it made me carry a lot of shame and guilt into my adulthood. Shame and guilt that made me falsely believe that I had done the same to others when I had become an adult. It was only through therapy that I discovered that these memories weren't true, and yet, I still hold the shame of "having" them. They also don't erase some of the shitty and manipulative things I did as a teenager when I was being abused, or the fact that as an adult, I am a very abrasive, whiny, and difficult person to know, let alone like. I feel like most of my posting activity here is negative, and that no one would miss me if I disappeared.



That's to say nothing of the way our country is headed, or the fact that I have no way of getting out of here or standing up to anyone in power, or even trying to live a life with my Canadian girlfriend. I'm 41, trans, and I live in a deep red state. I have everything here all behind me too. It feels like my life is already over, and like better things will never be possible. I don't know what to do. Just...someone give me a reason to still keep pushing forward? Any encouragement at all. That'd 
be helpful.
