It's one of those genres of fiction that I don't like. Factual based ones done by actual professionals generally get a free pass (but like with an documentary, you should always fact check and check for author bias and political beliefs because these can also be bunk) but the ones that REALLY bother me are speculative True Crime. The type you usually find on YouTube, TikTok and nearly all social media platforms.



Any time I've seen it, it's nearly universally ableist as shit. I feel sorry for any neurodivergent person that get wrapped into things and get probed by "experts" saying they must be hiding something, are "crazy", must be murderers etc because our "body language is off", or we look weird, or not reacting correctly or any number of ableist and nasty stereotypes thrown at us; and because of the nature of social media are then blasted and left open to attack by hundred to thousands of people. I wish their were better laws against horrid shit like this (and against people who pretend to by psychologist online).



I despise the genre for promoting arm chair psychology, for pushing pseudo-science BS like "body-language experts", the same shits who declared everyone MUST hated Brie Larson because "body language"; yeah it's hard to notice when I've seen this their is a massive dose of misogyny as well (and racism and phobia against the LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people). 



And lastly, I hate how it turns real life horrors, people and serious crimes into a game, a show for people to watch and act like it's an episode of Law and Order or the many number of murder mysteries; it feels so damn gross and wrong.

He comes off super dumb in the clip, but I just want this context out here before we get pages of people screaming about how terrible he is as if this is relatively recent and his last known position on the topic. TBH I don't understand the point of this thread. Just to make fun of the bad take? Let's be clear, just because his views evolved, or because he pushed out a statement after the interview declaring he's totally not homophobic (While insisting his questions were legitimate concerns.) and the Internet was blowing his remarks out of all proportion because he was "just asking questions" doesn't remove from the fact that in the span of two minutes Irons ran the gamut from expressing concerns same sex weddings "debase" marriage, to posing the suggestion it would open the door to incestuous relationships to flippantly comparing gay romance to the relationship between a dog and their owner.



It's all well and good to say it's 13 years ago, but 2013 wasn't a time where gay people were out of sight. Even by the standards of then, comparing gay men to beastiality/animal ownership and incest was extremely homophobic in a way even a lot of the right were moving away from associating from. (The Tories were actively even trying to paint themselves as LGBT friendly.)

The passage of time matters because to the best of my knowledge he hasn't been reiterating these views and hasn't been actively working to enact policy shaped by them. This context matters and should be brought up. You can see in this thread some people reading this and not knowing this.



I guess it's up to the individual to decide if they believe he still secretly holds these views or if he truly changed his mind. To me that seems pointless and impossible

Passage of time can be a potential mitigating circumstance, but in this instance, comparing same sex relationships to incest and bestiality in 2013 doesn't really scream of "He couldn't have known better." Because, again, homosexuality was visible and pretty commonly accepted by then. Graham Norton was on the telly every week, David Cameron's Tories were actively pushing for Same Sex Marriage to shun the past of section 28 and capitalise on the surge in accepting attitudes. Even by yhe standards of 2013, what he said was outrageously homophobic.



I'm not even really convinced the Hollywood Reporter article paints Irons as someone who genuinely evolved their views. He put out a blanket statement addressing comments he made about abortion, sexual abuse and same sex marriage to "avoid them being a distraction to the Berlin Film Festival" that he was a juror on. At best, he has a pattern of gobbling up and regurgitating ultra-conservative talking points that may or may not persist today, and the only reason anyone would go remotely easy on Irons for articulating things like abortion being physical and mental abuse of women and alluding to gay romantic relationships being akin to animal ownership would be because he's a beloved actor.

Remember, these are grown men who have an unhealthy attachment to RPGs to the point they self-diagnose themselves with DID and map out their personalities like members of a Final Fantasy party with their own names, stats, gender, attraction, etc. They spend more time in the character creator of a videogame to make their EXACT idealized self-insert instead of actually playing the game and will go into convulsions if they can't relate to a protag on a fundamental level.

To be frank, I'm not interested in seeing another downward push of patriarchal bias directly built into pipelines while the industry is already struggling with it. GenAI is heavily skewed towards making women "attractive" in the ways we used to laugh at a few years ago.
