Nepenthe, a lot of people make the argument that eating animal products* is unethical.  I know you said you don't have time for that, fighting all the racism is taking up all your time, so fortunately, your local representative has made the decision for you and stopped being reactive to what constituents actually want and has started proactively determining and then enforcing what’s right and wrong. So if you keep eating meat, you’ll be fined or jailed or worse.  Sometimes, there's a big cost to proactively coerce people into doing the right thing, standing on principle, instead of appealing to what a constituency actually wants [marketing].

I'm confused by their argument. Isn't the "tyranny of the majority" a core aspect of a real democracy? And the majority doesn't want trans women in women sports. Not saying that this is always automatically a good thing but it's for better and worse a core pillar. So I'm just confused why they think that this somehow makes it not a real democracy

Tyranny of the majority warns that democracy gives the majority substantial political power but it doesn’t make majority preference morally infallible..but they construe that to mean that any minority group's voice should automatically be settled policy and what they say and want is always compatible with the rights people have in the US.  The system protects the minority with constitutional rights, courts and equal protection, and limits on govt power to impose on their life...those rights exist because there's an assumption that the majority opinion isn’t automatically just or legit on its own, so the constitution guarantees a very base level of rights.  But it doesn't mean the minority gets a veto over everyone else or that people can't debate them or that there aren't competing rights that they're infringing on.  "If we have to sacrifice the most marginalized groups every election to "save democracy"...is it actually a democracy?"
