Bad timing

A toddler was stabbed in a stroller at a Providence school bus stop. The suspect was repeatedly freed in prior cases.

The suspect, Nelson Blanco, 46, had been found mentally incompetent to stand trial earlier this year and was freed. He was previously accused of stabbing children in 2003.

The man whom police say stabbed a 2-year-old in the face as she sat in a stroller at a school bus stop on Wednesday has been repeatedly released into the community after being deemed incompetent to stand trial in other criminal cases, the Globe has learned.
Police Chief Oscar Perez said the toddler is “fighting for her life” in critical condition at the hospital as of Thursday morning. Her mother, 26, who police said was stabbed in the shoulder in the attack, was treated and released and is with her daughter.
Police allege Nelson Blanco, 46, who has no known address, did not know the mother and daughter before he attacked them on Broad Street around 1:50 p.m. Perez said investigators do not have any confirmed motive for the assault.


Blanco has been deemed incompetent to stand trial after mental health evaluations in at least three unrelated criminal cases in the past, Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office said. In one case, back in 2003, he was accused of stabbing two 7-year-old boys.

Most recently, he was deemed mentally incompetent in July to stand trial in a domestic violence case from 2024, prosecutors said. He was allowed to remain free with outpatient treatment rather than being institutionalized, according to court documents, after a doctor recommended he was “not likely to imperil the safety of the community or himself at this time.”
