Dictatorships don't exist in a vacuum, They're a set of conditions that create an opportunity for an individual to take full control while holding as few keys of power as possible. Either through power consolidation, limited resources, or military power and other measures. You don't get a benevolent dictator because they're not going to be able to hold onto the keys. By making things better you are directly loosening your control over the situation. The more opportunities people have the less power you have over them.

It's why Republicans keep harping on about oil. They want to be a petro-state because it's an easier path to control when all the countries wealth is decided by a single resource/industry.

We live under a dictatorship of the bourgeois, and the hypothetical Romney situation is funny. He was famous for saying, "Corporations are Individuals," and "47% are freeloaders." There is no democracy in a class based society, and there is also not true freedom under a dictatorship, unless it's a transitional dictatorship of the proletariat, not an individual, but the people.

You're right that I am veering too far off the hypothetical that was proposed, which is why I'm inconsistent with the hypothetical. So I will take the L on that and move on.

And no I don't think there is democracy in the developed world, because it's right there in that statement. Developed means there is an undeveloped, underdeveloped and more accurately, exploited world. Within developed countries there are people at the margins being exploited, so it's not a democracy if it requires unequal exchange and unjust conditions to maintain it.
