I have never been so thoroughly angry at such a brazen abuse of police power in a video game before.

It wasn't just the impounding, because it's feasible he'd have gotten reports of her car during the race and thus have probable cause. But then Homeboy comes at The Player demanding ID, to which I said aloud "You don't owe him shit." But The Player complies. Upon answering some inquiry with "yes," he screams to correct you: "YES OFFICER!" before leveling a shit-eating grin at you. Coupled with his mocking attitude and the insults, it became unbearable.

"I hope he dies. Yo, Schultz--" My friend is also playing on another rig, "Does this dude die?"

"I don't know; I'm not that far into it."

"He literally needs to die."

My brother chimed in: "I am so...MAD."

This scene is eerily effective- from the establishment and abuse of power dynamics, to the naturalistic voice acting, to the low underscore- in a way that threw me off guard, like it was written by people with direct experience with bullshit police, and I needed to know the rest immediately. Once I got home I YouTubed the rest of the cutscenes and oh my god, I loved it.

All in all, Need For Speed: Heat should not be slept on. It wasn't just it's ability to tell a fun adventure story with appealing characters, but to do so while skillfully weaving in themes regarding police corruption, race, and power into the workings of an arcade racing game that is relatable and worth commending. I was pleasantly surprised, I remain enthralled weeks after the fact

This is some of the better writing I've seen in a game, with the exception of some of the racing NPCs. Nothing about it is particularly embarrassing. Not sure what you guys are on.

And this game doesn't have a well told story. Lines still ooze cheese, but I guess it's always been part of the NFS charm... I guess?

On the contrary I think the actual plot is well done, both in its sequence of events and the themes that inform those events. If your argument against that is that lines are delivered cheesily, well, I don't know what to tell you other than I don't think that cheese supersedes the rest of what the writing has to offer, particularly in a medium that- at best- tries to make itself out to be apolitical, and at worst, is actively hostile to stories that are relevant to minorities and give them opportunities for meaningful representation.

You can always report any content on the site you feel breaks the rules and that the staff should look at. But be aware that we always look at the preceding conversation to take the full context into consideration.

Regardless, my point still stands. There is very little of the F&F franchise that interests me on a narrative level in regards to what I, at this point in my life, look for in my media. I appreciate its representation when, you know, it's not fucking over Han, but it is basically Blade Syndrome; the representation is relatively incidental to the goings-on of the plot (which, again, I don't have a problem with. Minorities should be able to be in dumb, meaningless blockbuster shlock too). On the other side of the coin I don't think Heat's story works with incidental characters. I don't think you can drop in anyone from any background and have the same story work and be as effective to the degree that it is. And these are more of the stories we need all over, particularly in gaming.

Real talk if the sequel doesn't get these characters back and continue their story I will lose my absolute mind.

I won't discount the possibility of the former, but I personally don't know the artists/genres in question because I'm old as fuck and completely out of touch with modern music. Fact of the matter is, Black artists and Black-dominated genres always get these dismissive attitudes from non-Black folks. "I don't know them." "Who?" "Where's the rock music?" It's annoying.

And this isn't just about being out of touch, because conversations about white-led alternative and folk band shit that is less relevant than most of who is on this track list never gets the "who are these people?" treatment, despite the fact that you'd think people who claim to be out of touch wouldn't have heard of them either. Or at the very least, even if that's true and they haven't heard of them, they don't seek to fill threads about new albums and soundtracks from these folks with snide comments about relevancy or remarks about having never listening to them before.

The Blackness is clearly the point of contention here, and worse yet, it's not even a US-centric thing either as other places around the world historically and today have outright criminalized Black-originating music. This low-key disregard towards film and game soundtracks that use genres like rap and r&b as a basis for their composition has been consistent pattern, and it's not cute anymore.

The way I see it, underneath identity politics, there's a generalized spectrum of political thought wherein you believe in more democratic means of governance or more hierarchical means of governance. Individual beliefs can fall along the spectrum, but in general as a person your aggregate politics place you as either more democratic or more hierarchical.
