So there's been a shitload of transphobia on the feeds in the last week, and now my feed has finally shifted to talking about how much transphobic bigotry people are getting on their feed - particularly regarding one thread that went viral, probably the most-liked post I've ever seen on the app that's also been getting shared on instagram because of how much engagement it got (+20M views, +20K likes)

How much longer can mosseri go on without addressing all the hate on the platform and complete lack of moderation? (probably forever)

Threads transphobia continued 

The motto til now has just been encouraging people not to engage and just to block, which is good advice, but when the numbers get this extreme with no accountability it's just not a practical option. My block list is thousands long and it still doesn't take much scrolling for me to run into hundreds more to add.

It's an incredibly monotonous chore to cover it all, and it would really save an immense amount of trouble if there were simply a single button to block everyone that liked a certain post. With that we could easily knock out 20K hateful bigots from our feed in an instant thanks to that viral screed going around right now. With more availability to block the trolls with a click, that's what would actually starve them of the harassment targets they crave.

Of course, social media companies don't WANT to starve trolls, because they drive engagement.

The algorithm does shows you what you engage with. Answering, or commenting on shitty posts will show you more of those unfortunately.

I think it's a good lesson about social media though. Not every stupid opinion needs engaging.

That still beats my experience on Bluesky, where it was an endless stream of guys and furries. At least the Threads algo seemed better at figuring out that I didn't want that content after a handful of hides/mutes, whereas Bluesky never seemed to stop, to the point I gave up on the platform.
