Last night during the Royal Rumble the Wrestling OT turned into a defacto hype thread for the royal rumble with many members who simply avoided all discussion of the breaking news about VKM who could not even be bothered to make a passing comment about how awful the news was turned the thread into an unofficial Royal Rumble hype thread.  Its gross, for some of us the behavior of the WWE is extremely triggering and the thread has been awash in hand-wrining about the ethical consumption of media or posts that just blatantly ignore the very fresh very disgusting news and post hype gifs of moments they like on the product.

Say what you will about the new games, but Kratos was to unlikeable in the OG games, even for a Greek hero. 

I mean, he was supposed to be. The games weren't a path of redemption but petty revenge. None of Kratos beefs with the Gods were exactly valid.

Ah yes, cis white folks know nothing about "minor oppression" since they aren't ever victims of the pervasive War on Drugs or due process free administrative state. Or any other moral panic or overpolicing. Cis white people definitely don't wind up on death row despite being innocent. They certainly weren't imprisoned during wars or anything because of their background or beliefs. Religious and ethnic policing never happened before except to Black people.

Just one day, the 70% of the population who have been cheering on the trans/Black/brown eradication will suddenly wake up and find they're being eradicated too because that's just what Bad Guys do, want to kill everyone en masse (aka degrowth) even and maybe especially the people they say they're doing the genocide on behalf of. Even their weird oppression fetish fantasies don't have a theory of mind in them.

Yeah. Alot of these Greek heroes aren't exactly the paragons of Mortality. Odysseey for example just slaughters a bunch of people for the crime of suitoring his wife. And before that just raids and slays Helio's cattle. From that end, Kratos is definitely a Greek Hero.

I don't think I'm the only progressive with a ton of resentment, built up over a decade, at the fringe online left.

It's such a cancerous set of tactics. Waves of anonymous accounts acting like cops. Morally loaded language out of proportion to any issue at hand. Taking statements out of context and twisting them in dishonest ways for a dunk. An inability to provide credible sources for extraordinary claims. A total disdain for nuance.

And always, always, always, a ravenous appetite to hurt people our own side.

And the reputation of progressives has been destroyed accordingly. We're deeply unpopular in the party. We're seen as harassing assholes online (the way we used to critique gamers for behaving, BTW). The culture on Twitch and YouTube is constantly documenting the hypocrisy and insanity and it's well deserved.

A decade ago, when we were more associated with policies like Medicare for All, there WAS a window for us to become the next evolution of the party. And it was utterly squandered.

I'll always be a progressive, because I think the policies are the right ones. But, it's time to admit that online progressives are too destructive to ever be a meaningful political force in America, except in the sense we are driving normal people into the arms of the right.
